Is there anything I can do about intimate issues due to medication? (NSFW)

Asked by ItalianPrincess1217 (11979points) November 28th, 2011 from iPhone

I was put on Zoloft last week and ever since I have been unable to orgasm. I still have interest in sex and I can get turned on. Finishing is the issue. It’s almost impossible. Is there any solution to this?

It had the same effect on me, ultimately it got to the point where that entire area was numb. I don’t believe you can do anything about the side effect, short of considering a different medication.

Ask your physician for another medication. There are many anti-depressants. This one has bad side effects. Try another. There should be no problem in doing this. Don’t be embarrassed to say what the side effect is that you want to avoid. Doctors know all about this.

I had a similar problem with Zoloft, and my then-partner and I used the vibrator to help me. It worked just fine, but he and I had known each other since seventh grade and were very comfortable with life’s little exigencies.

I should add that we were both in our sixties and ready for a good laugh. (He was using Viagra as well.)

You have another vote from me for asking your M.D. for another medication. There are many available that don’t have that side-effect. There’s no reason you should have to experience it.

SSRIs are notorious for this., I tried several and finally went off of them in favor of Calms Forte (an herbal anti-anxiety medication).

But if you are on them for depression, you can have your doctor try another one. Or you can try a different kind of medication like Welbutrin. Discuss this with your physician.

I have a similar problem with Lexapro. I have very little interest in sex at the moment and am finding it difficult to get turned on at all. You could try a different medication with the supervision of your gp.

On the male side, I had the same side effect (ED), but my doctor ended up prescribing me Wellbutrin in addition to Zoloft. After about two weeks, the problem symptom subsided. Ask your doctor…
