Windows/PC experts: Why is it not keeping my control panel adjustments?

Asked by DominicX (28813points) November 29th, 2011

The default setting on my laptop make it so the cursor moves around a little too slowly for my liking, so I increased the pointer speed by one hash mark and also checked the box for “Enhance Pointer Precision”.

I click “Apply” and then “OK” and the settings are applied.

But when I restart the computer, the settings are back to what they used to be and none of my changes are in effect any longer.

This does not happen on my other PC. I can change all the mouse settings I want and they will remain when restarting/shutting down the computer. But on this other computer, that is not the case.

So what the hell is going on here?

Where in the control panel are you making the adjustments? The reason I ask is that these days laptops come with touch pads and mice, and sometimes the mouse settings override the touch pad setting.

Otherwise, I’d be wondering how well the PC’s clock is working – is it keeping date & time okay? Because that can be a sign that the CMOS battery is dying. That’s the battery that retains the computer’s flash memory, including the clock and all of the “basic setup” information.

Thank you :) I was adjusting it under “Mouse” but I forgot there was a separate software for the mouse I had installed so I had to adjust it under that software, not the default (which only affected the touchpad).
