CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ)—A person questioned in connection with an attempted robbery of an armored truck driver, in downtown Charleston, has been released.
A spokesperson with the Charleston Police Department tells WSAZ.com no one is being charged at this time.
Police questioned a man who matched the description of the attempted robber, but he was not charged. Investigators say they caught up with him shortly after the incident along Lee Street near the Clay Center.
“I was just going to ask the Brinks guy about an application I filled out,” Kieon Sharp said. “I knocked on his window and he looked at me and just waived at me told me basically to scat.”
Police say the attempted robbery happened in front of the BB&T bank building at 300 Summers Street.
The driver of the “Brinks” armored carrier truck told police a man tapped on his window with a handgun. The driver radioed to his partner to stay inside the bank and that’s when the man walked away.
Charleston Police were given a description of the person and later caught up with him.
“It was just a total mess, a misunderstanding,” Sharp said.
At the scene, witnesses told WSAZ.com the man pulled out some type of object, but they weren’t sure if it was a weapon.
“There are extensive security measures involved in these trucks and so it is not a wise decision,” Joe Ciccarelli with the FBI said.
Joe Ciccarelli with the FBI says anytime this type of crime happens the person would not only face state armed robbery charges, but it’s also a federal violation to rob an armored carrier.
At this time, no charges have been filed. The incident is still under investigation.
“Well we don’t have enough to make any arrests and it looks like it may be just a misunderstanding, but we do investigate all of this stuff very thoroughly and make sure everything is good,” Bobby Eggleton with the Charleston Police Department said.
