Technology-wise, how do digital rentals work?

How do digital rentals work? Where you pay a fee to rent something for, say, a week. Does it vary from audio to ebook to document to video?

Probably the item requires a license to be openable and the license expires after a certain period of time. It’s called digital rights and I’ve had a lot of music denied to me due to that.
