Singer Simple Sewing Machine Needle Jammed?

Asked by notabridesmaid (307points) December 6th, 2011

I just purchased a Singer Simple Sewing Machine and I have never used a sewing machine before. I followed the directions for threading it and when I tried it out the needle just stopped moving and now won’t move up or down when I use the wheel on the back or when I press the foot petal. Any ideas on what the problem is? Is it possible for some thread to be jammed inside?Help please?!

Open up the bottom half and see if your bobbin is tangled. Also, stop using the foot pedal until you figure out why it is jammed, or you’ll likely break your needle.

Check your manual for a helpful hints section. Also if you still are under warranty call Singer and ask them. No sense voiding the warranty if you don’t have to.

^ Call them. Singer will be glad to help you I’m sure.

Not that I am against calling Singer or consulting your manual… most likely you have a tangled bobbin, which is a very simple fix and a common issue you’ll run into with any machine. You just untangle it. I would check it, first.

Here’s a Singer FAQ page that might help. But I suspect that @ANef_is_Enuf has nailed it. I’ve jammed a few bobbins, myself. No, that’s not a metaphor for something else; I sew from time to time.

I have the same machine, and had the same problem. The thread kept jamming, even after I untangled it and began again.

With a little research, I discovered that this happens when the upper thread is not threaded exactly right. It must be pulled snug in both the feeders located on the top of the machine, which was what I was failing to do. There is another place where a mis-thread causes the thread to jam below the feeders, so carefully read and follow the threading instructions and I think you won’t jam the next time you use the machine. Now I frequently check that the thread is tight in the top feeders and don’t have that problem any more.
