Glory is probably the second best.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is the best civil war film ever.

They gave some good recommendations above. I liked the Outlaw Josey Wales to get a sense of how messed up some of the veterans were after the war.

The Outlaw Josey Wales is one of my favorites. Damn, @Imadethisupwithnoforethought just beat me..

The North and the South—based on the book by John Jakes

@WestRiverrat Screw that. Buster Keaton’s The General was the original film, and is tons better.

Another vote for both Glory and TGTB and TU.

“Birth of a Nation” is horrible, horrible, horrible. Not just the story, but how the movie changed history. Many historians attribute the spike in lynchings from 1915–1930 to this movie.

Another one—An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge was made into a movie.
