Why did President Obama hold the Chanukah celebration way before the holiday?

Asked by JLeslie (65743points) December 9th, 2011

What do you think about it? Is it any different than having a Christmas party Dec 10th?

Maybe so it stands out and is recognized. The holiday is so close to Christmas, it could get lost in the shuffle as the old saying goes.

He’s going on vacation, and would not be there to host the celebration on Hannukah.A better question might be why a President is celebrating a religious holiday in the White House at all. I am sick to death of these nods to religion, all of them. But I must say, Michelle’s blue dress was stunning.

I agree. A White House Christmas Party and Hanukkah celebration are inappropriate.

AstroChuck's avatar

I’m sure it has something to do with him being a muslim.

Dutchess_III's avatar

No no @AstroChuck. It’s because he’s Black.

@AstroChuck and @Dutchess lll Your answers serious or joking sound prejudicial and that type of joke, I don’t find funny. But, maybe that’s because my ancestors were the butt of jokes years ago or maybe I just don’t have a good sense of humor.

JLeslie's avatar

@comity Not to worry, they most certainly are joking. They are making fun of the crazy racist accusations that flew around about Obama.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@comity could be the latter. Shouldn’t jump to assumptions about people you know nothing about.

comity's avatar

@Dutchess lll (wish I knew how to underline) Just judging by what was said “It’s because he’s black” Didn’t realize I had to know you to judge that. I guess after being on Fluther awhile I’ll learn better where people are coming from. Right now I just see it as it is.

Dutchess_III's avatar

No, you think you see it as it is. What you think isn’t how it is at all, and THAT is just as bad as racism. In fact, that is the premise that racism is built on—assumptions that one “knows” or “sees it as it is,” when they don’t.

What do you mean “underline”? Do you mean underscore? Or did you want to underline my whole name? The @sign usually brings up a list of jellies who have responded in a thread, and you pick the one you want to direct your comment to. If it doesn’t bring up the list, then as long as you spell the name correctly it will automatically red and underline it. in my case, you needed to throw in the underscore _ and it would have created the link.

I’m not sure, but I wonder if someone at Faux Noose or Geller will spin it as, “Because him and his Al-Qaeda buddies want to destroy Israel”.

comity's avatar

@ Dutchess lll (can’t underline under you name – don’t know how) I should have said I see it as written and “It’s because he’s black” I found offensive. I campaigned for Obama, organized a meetup for him, etc. so, it bothered me. Glad you got upset as that means you didn’t mean it. Peace!

To get all those presents much earlier what else? Darn sneaky let me tell yah.

@comity

Please forgive me if you already realize this, but I think that the comments of @AstroChuck and @Dutchess_III, were meant as parodies of what some right wingnuts might say in regard to Obama’s gesture.

JLeslie's avatar

@comity Well, fluther rules probably @AstroChuck and @Dutchess_III should have put a tilde ~ after their comment so newbies would know they are not serious. The symbol means sarcastic to help us know when people are sarcastic since online communication can be difficult to know someone’s tone or intent.

To get a name to pop up in red you use the @ symbol and then start typing the name no spaces and the list should start to come up. @com and I can see your name on a list I just click on it. The list will not come up if you have spaces or text already after where you are tyoing. For instance if I start a paragraph like this one I am in, and then want to go back write at the very top, when I try to bring up someones name the list will not pop up.

To make words in italics or bold see the directions immediately below the window you write in. You have to be sure to not have any space for the text changes to work. It’s all confusing at first, but with a little trial and error you’ll get it.

@JLeslie Thank you! You’re wonderful!!

So now you can use the @ sign, eh @comity – how convenient.

I agree with @GoldieAV16He’s going on vacation, and would not be there to host the celebration on Hannukah.A better question might be why a President is celebrating a religious holiday in the White House at all. I am sick to death of these nods to religion, all of them. But I must say, Michelle’s blue dress was stunning. except for the latter part – her dress was unexceptional. But I digress.

AstroChuck's avatar

@JLeslie/ No no no. A tilde at the end of my post would have undermined my highly evolved sense to recognize what is truly humorous and what is not. My wit is all about subtlety. To put it plainly- the tilde is not my friend.

JLeslie's avatar

It seems odd to me to light a menorah when it isn’t Chanukah, but I am fine with him doing a party ahead of the holiday, I understand he has a busy schedule.

Whether or not there should be any holiday celebration. Well, the whole Christmas tree thing is an annual event at the white house. I was going to start this paragraph by saying he is Christian, so of course he would have Christmas trees, but I guess we could argue only his personal quarters should be decorated.

Do most countries do something similar? The Pres or PM does a holiday thing and makes a few comments to the press?

flutherother's avatar

President Obama and the White House celebrate Chanukah for political rather than religious reasons.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, you did good with your campaigning @comity because I voted for him and I don’t regret it. I also got two members of my family, who had never been registered to vote in their lives, to register and to vote for him. Working on getting more on board for the next election.

After Obama was elected, I was so dismayed at his treatment by the Republicans that I worked the next elections for governor etc. for the Democrats. Put up signs, distributed fliers, sat long, dreary hours in the campaign office eating stale cookies and reading books.

comity's avatar

@Dutchess_III Good for you. Keep up the good work. It’s going to be a tough election!

Dutchess_III's avatar

I hope we surprise the hell out of the Republicans. They’re in their own insane little world. And, like insane people, think no one notices that they’re NUTS.

Hey! You learned how to work the @ sign! W00T!

Countrybumkin's avatar

I have to clarify that Obama isn’t black. He is bi-racial.

zensky's avatar

I didn’t know Obama was bi-sexual!

Dutchess_III's avatar

He’s not @zensky. He had a sex change operation. So did Michelle. They both used to be White.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Ah, but it’s true @JLeslie. I saw it in writing on the internet (look above your post and you will see it in writing on the internet.)

Countrybumkin's avatar

Yes its all true
