Frankly, I think the gifts were for the parents. What’s an infant going to do with that stuff? A responsible adult would never give incense making materials to a child under the age of 12.
If they brought pampers, pacifiers, and pajamas I’d say those were wise gifts for the baby.
I’ve always heard that it sucks to have your birthday on Christmas.
@worriedguy Yeah, they didn’t choose wisely with those gifts, not at all.
@thorninmud My younger brother has a birthday 2 days before xmas, he’d agree with you there.
See? It has been going on for thousands of years. It’s not a recent phenomenon. Even supposedly wise men don’t have a clue what to get people for the holidays. I mean how hard is it to find a baby gift?
That’s why He created Whitman’s Samplers, Hickory Farms Gift boxes and Delta Sonic Car Wash/ Applebees combos.
I guess you’d have to see the wrapping paper to know, really. Unfortunately, the photos of the event are very low resolution, and black and white on top of it. Hard to say.
Christian historians believe they were most likely sold to finance their trip to Egypt.
The three gifts were actually a racing suit, a race car, and a race track.
Because this was the baby.
@ragingloli He grew into his helmet when he reached puberty, for it is written & that is the way of things.
I might have been lied to by my elementary school but they tried pretty hard to have me memorize the bible. I think the wise men came to Bethlehem to witness the birth of jesus because they already knew the role he was to play in history. It doesn’t seem too much of a stretch to go from wise man to prophet.
Birthday. Christmas didn’t exist then. Use your noggin, dude!
No, really!?!
Must have been just awful back then, oh well happy birthday it is then.

@thorninmud: It is equally sucky to have been born on Dec. 31. Restaurants start to serve dinner at 10;00, prices go up for all entertainment and recreation and everyone drinks too much. The birthday girl, like the cheese, snuggles her cat and goes to bed early.
You know, the three wise men were really Jewish firemen from Kansas City who didn’t celebrate Christmas anyway.
Oh come on, it wasn’t that bad
@thorninmud:My standards are much higher for you than for the lumpen proletariat.

They were probably there to witness Mary: “Whoa! You mean you actually sold that whole ‘virgin birth’ story? Your husband, your family, the townsfolk – all swallowed that? Righteous! We want you on our sales team.”
Actually, the ‘3 Wise Men’ did not show up when Mary gave birth, that’s why the ‘Angels’ appeared to the shepherds in the fields, so the shepherds could go & see the child. The 3 Wise Men did not get there until Mary’s child was several years old. And they advised Mary & Joseph to take their child & leave for Egypt immediately ( & the gifts they presented to Mary & Joseph were probably sold in order to finance their relocation). I am not religious now, but I was raised attending church & this is exactly what the Bible says about the birth of Jesus.
@Linda_Owl Actually this is one of those instances in the Bible where the details get flubbed. Essentially you have four different versions of the birth of Jesus. There are similarities, differences and additions. They’re just close enough that unless people read them horizontally they tend to blur together in your brain. Same thing with the two creation stories and the various accounts of the crucifixion.
Neither. They were tribute gifts.
Cheers folks!
Oh & to the minority who thought this was a serious inquest….thanks for the laugh :¬)
@ucme: Not yet an inquest, I don’t think. Request, perhaps, since no biblical scholars were harmed during this projec.
@Linda_Owl Well, there goes the Christmas play! Can’t fit an 8 year old in a manger!
