Do I need a real cable connection in order to sync my iMac desk top to my new Mac air?

Asked by gailcalled (54647points) December 11th, 2011

Should I be using iCloud for this? And if I need a cable, what’s the official name for it? There are too many products at the Apple Store. I am not understanding this intuitively.

I want to transfer my photos in iPhoto and Flickr plus the contents of my address book.

If both Macs are on the same network you can use Migration Assistant. Works for wifi networks too.

Look in Applications/Utilities/ for Migration Assistant.

It pretty much walks you through transferring stuff over.

I thougth I had done this today. But when I opened iPhoto and Address book on the Air, there is no content.

How do I discover whether they are on the same network? I have a medium speed DSL connection and a Airport $99.00 gismo.

When I did the Migration, I had to connect the Air to the power cable; it all did seem and look very straightforward. The Migration icon appeared on each screen and the information seemed to be flowing from iMac to Air…except that it ultimately didn’t. I’m not even sure of the language I I should be using.
