Do think Iran will give back our drone?

Asked by saint (3975points) December 12th, 2011

President Obama asked them to please return it.

It is a for sure they will get any data, and any technological gems they can.
But after they strip it, do you think they will they give it back?

Why would they?

HA! I seriously doubt it. At the most after they have gotten everything they need and have successfully reverse engineered a few things like the stealth capabilities of the drone. So in other words… No.

Sure, and that’s a pig that just flew over your shoulder.

Either this or your other post is going to be removed I’m sure, so I figured I’ll just copy paste my response here….

I doubt it, and I highly doubt they will do so either… Unless we trade them something for it.

I also think the value of it is being overstated.

Iran’s entire military is self-conceived thanks to decades of UN sanctions preventing them from getting weapons from even the Russians or Chinese. They would not only have to reverse engineer the technology, but they’d have to build from scratch the base technology to make use of whatever they reverse-engineered out of the drone. And in the end the real value of the drone is minimal. Some stealth and surveillance tech that will be out of date within a year anyways. The only real threat they pose with it is selling it to China or Russia. But in all reality, it would be a mediocre benefit for either of those countries, and one would argue the neither wants to “affront” the US for such a minimal gain.

I also missed the memo where Obama announced his Irish heritage….

I actually think they might as a public gesture. Obviously they’ll wait till China and Russia give them the green light, but sure, once everyone’s got the data and samples they need the only thing left is the political value of being able to say “see, we are willing to work with you”.

The Iranian government would be idiots to do so. I have no love for them, but what possible advantage is there in the gesture? THey ought to sell it to the Russians or the Chinese.

As others have said, they have probably disassembled it already to get its secrets out.

Seems like I recall something several years ago about Iran having their own drones. I would think they would hold onto the US one to improve a technology they are already familiar with so, no, I do not look for it to be sent back as an early christmas present.

I think if you lose military equipment that you were flying illegally in another country’s airspace then getting your toys back are the least of your concerns

You monkeys you, you give me back my drone! (Sorry, it just slipped out.)

filmfann's avatar

Nah, they will sell it to China.

Well, when you kick your ball into a neighbour’s garden…..

Why would you give back your bargaining chip? They will not give back the drone and there really is not reason to expect that they will. We were patrolling their skies without consent and were caught doing it.
I would love to see the number of U.N. violations the U.S. have vs. Iran. I know that Israel has the most. I guess what my point is is that Iran is not really doing anything wrong aside from openly antagonizing the U.S.
They will strip it and probably pass on the information to their allies or they will strip it and use what ever information they find as a bargaining chip in negotiations with the U.S.

No one in their right mind would give the drone back.
Some advanced tech to gain from the drone, plus a nice bargaining chip. “You or one of your allies attacks us, and the drone and all extracted data goes to China.”
