Does this bizarre trick work for you? And why does it happen?

Asked by Mariah (25883points) December 12th, 2011

Found this little oddity in my travels on the interwebs:

Stretch your arms in front of you; note that your fingers can reach approximately the same distance. Now rub one of your elbows. Stretch your arms back out again; the arm you rubbed will appear shorter. Shake your arm out and it’ll go back to normal.

I was skeptical, but I tried it and it actually worked for me. What gives?

Question: Did you know about this before you tried it? If so, then I would chalk it up to the idiomotor effect.

The power of suggestion

Shaking your arm stretches the muscles out thus resulting in a farther stretch. Bending and rubbing causes it to tense up. This is why the “trick” works.

Why doesn’t it work when I do it? :\

Hey, is it my imagination or did something else just get shorter?

^Stop playing with it.

^That is not the solution I would suggest.

Oh wait… now it’s getting… Nevermind.

It took me a couple of times to realize it. It’s kind of hard to notice, for me anyway. I see what you’re saying. It’s weird! I wonder why that happens.

I saw no difference :(

No difference.

I just wish I could touch my elbow with my nose! Lol.

Worked for me. Very weird whatever the science behind it is.
