Christmas presents; at what age did you stop buying for your nieces and nephews (if you ever did buy for them)

Asked by Jude (32204points) December 12th, 2011

My two nephews are 19 and 17 and I think that it’s time to stop with the gifts.

I also am trying to decide when to stop. My neice and nephew are 16 and 19. And, do you stop both at the same time? Or, the older one first? For now I am going to continue giving them xmas gifts (I actually send them a check). I have a feeling I will be giving them xmas money until they are both graduated from college. We’ll see.

I stopped the year they turn 18 or graduate from high school.

My Aunt still buys for me and my sister and we are in our 30s. It’s family.

My aunt still sends me stuff. When I was in college it was cash. Now it is cookies and socks.

I send my sisters kids stuff. Last year they got a AppleTV and socks.

It has never been a practice in our family to buy for nieces and nephews. We just remember them with a nice card.

I buy for the kids of them now…...until they have babies. I still have 2 I buy for and great neices and nephews galore.

I don’t usually buy presents… for anyone. This may make me seem harsh, but I grew up in a family where we were taught that there are more important things in life than materialistic things. I remember also being taught that gifts should not be given because one feels obligated to give them, but rather because he or she wants to give them. I don’t expect (or want) my Aunts and Uncles to give me any presents and I am now 21. Other people might be different.
