Who has a great, non-marinara, meatball sauce recipe?
This Christmas it’s just going to be me, @jonsblond, and the three little blondes. When this happens we dispense with the customary Christmas dinner and opt for a home made buffet of different finger foods and appetizers that we can munch on all day whenever the mood strikes us. This frees up very important football/toys/video game time for everyone.
@jonsblond makes some very kick ass meatballs and this year I am in charge of finding an alternate to the traditional marinara sauce we normally have with them. I am leaning toward a traditional sweet and sour sauce full of fresh ginger and garlic but would love to have a couple of more offerings for the table. Anyone?

No recipes to help, but how about something in the Alfredo family?
There is always Ketchup and Grape Jelly in equal parts.
Mushroom gravy with lots of coarse ground black pepper.
or
Sriracha!
What about melting a jar of pepper jelly over the meatballs? It gives the sweet and sour effect with a little bit of heat. It’s quite good.
PETA used to have a great red wine mushroom gravy recipe posted in their forums. I’d link to it but I have since been banned from their site.
You all have given some fantastic answers but I guess I should clarify that I’m looking for more of sauce to dip my balls in than a gravy to soak my balls in.
If you want dipping sauces, I would add some buffalo wing sauce, and maybe a mango/pepper salsa to the mix.
Just because it is a gravy recipe, doesn’t mean you can’t use it as a dip, you would just need a way to keep the gravy warm, a hot plate or some candle food warmers should work.
Dipping sauces:
Sriracha w/ mayonnaise & minced cilantro
Sriracha w mustard & curry powder
Sriracha w/ mesquite bbq sauce
Sriracha w/ ranch dressing
Sour creme w/ pureed garlic & paprika
Plain yogurt w/ minced cucumber, garlic and fresh minced dill fern
I really like the balls dipped in ranch dressing.
Ketchup, chili sauce and relish with horse radish to spice it up. (or hold the radish if the kids won’t like it.)
@Blondesjon Just regular bottled sweet relish. It makes kind of a shrimp cocktail sauce, which you can also get bottled. I prefer to make my own. And I love little meatballs with it; often take it to parties.
I’m all for the BBQ & ranch combo with meatballs.
Balkan style, which is my preferred form of pasta: olive oil, fresh minced garlic, and grated romano or parmsan cheese. Optionally you can add a dollop of tomato paste and/or a few dollops of plain yoghurt.
Anyone else read that as non_marijuana_ at first?
I swear, I’m not a pot head!
I do the chili sauce/grape jelly thing, in the crockpot. I suppose you could just heat up the sauce in a little sauce pan and use it for dipping, though. Having several different dipping sauces would be cool.
I had a wonderful mushroom red wine sauce a few months back. This Mushroom Red Wine Sauce Recipe sounds similar to what I had.
I also found a site that had a few nice sound Thai-inspired sauces that you might like. Such as this one for Cranberry Orange Ginger Sauce or This Thai Sauce with spring onions, garlic, honey, lemongrass, chilies, mint, ginger and soy sauce. Or This One with peanut butter, red curry paste and coconut milk.
And here’s one for a Chinese Barbecue Sauce that uses fennel, honey, garlic, white wine and five spice powder.
And here is one for a White Wine Garlic Alfredo Sauce
And last, but not least, here is one for Cajun Sauce with Cajun spices, worcestershire sauce, barbecue sauce and peach preserves.
Wow, I quickly read that as non-marijuana, meatball sauce recipe
count me in as someone who also read that as non-marijuana at first
You all are making this very difficult to choose. I’m really looking forward to Christmas Day. I’m sure my husband will make a great sauce with your help. Thanks! =)
Damnit I read it like that again.
…
@XOIIO If you knew my husband well enough you would know he would actually prefer a marijuana sauce instead of a non-marijuana sauce. That’s why I did a double take when I first read the question. ;)
