What is there to do when you get the fake hand cursor?

Asked by flo (13313points) December 13th, 2011

When I am about to click on the box before going to click on the “delete” the fake hand comes on. The real one also shows up an inch away (Added: sorry, not at the same time. I mean just when I try to click on the email no problem)
And it is in Gmail, where there has been changes. There is also an issue with the screen scrolling.

The real hand shows up when I try to click on the email. So I don’t mean at the same trime. Is there a corrective measure is my question?

You have to provide more information for us to help you. What application are you using? What OS? (And it’s cursor. A hand curser is… something different. Which you’ll see when cutting someone off in traffic.)

flo's avatar

Oops:) yes cursor. Anyway re. which OS, in case I happen to need to use another OS tomorrow. you can tell me about the one you know, and maybe other people will tell me about whichever they know about?

SmashTheState's avatar

@flo I… I’m not sure how to respond. You switch your operating system daily? We really do need to know to which application you’re referring. And currently, we don’t even know if you’re talking about a tablet, a cellphone, a desktop computer, or an Etch-a-Sketch™.

flo's avatar

@SmashTheState whatever comes to mind, you can just pick one.

SmashTheState's avatar

@flo No, it doesn’t work that way. In order to figure out what the problem is, we have to know the details. It’s completely impossible to help you unless and until you tell us, at the very least, which HARDWARE you’re using, and which APPLICATION you’re using.

When I say HARDWARE, I mean: Are you using a desktop computer? A tablet? A cellphone? A Blackberry?

When I say APPLICATION, I mean: Which computer program are you using? Firefox? Internet Explorer? Safari? Opera? If you aren’t inside a program and this is occurring, say, when trying to click on something on your cellphone, then which operating system is it using?

There is no generic, one-size-fits-all answer for this. There are thousands of operating systems and millions of applications on hundreds of different media. That results in potentially BILLIONS of possibilities. We can’t just pick one of those billions at random.

@flo, I have to agree with @SmashTheState. We need more details. I’m not sure what “the fake hand cursor” is. Is your computer just running kind of slow, maybe, and there is a delay that makes the cursor appear to show up twice?

flo's avatar

@SmashTheState that was a rhetorical (edit:comment) I’m telling you you don’t have to respond never mind the others, please move on

@lillycoyote I am thinking.

lillycoyote's avatar

Do you have a wireless mouse? It might need a new battery.

And @flo, @SmashTheState was only trying to help you.

flo's avatar

@lillycoyote why isn’t the weak battery affecting other things then?
I have to be off the computer for a while

lillycoyote's avatar

@flo A weak battery in a wireless mouse would only affect things related to your cursor.

blueiiznh's avatar

When in doubt do the following:
1) Alt-F4
2) battery pull
3) Ctrl-Alt-Del Restart
4) Ctrl-Atl-Del Shutdown and go make some cookies
5) wave back and see if the hand responds
6) realize you should have clicked it anyway the first time

@flo Was that a yes? Yes, I do have a wireless mouse? If so, just put a new battery or batteries in it. That may solve the problem. They’re just batteries. Give a try. If it doesn’t solve the problem, get back to us.

Everyone:
What I am trying to figure out is why:
* consistently the fake hand shows up only when it is over that particular box, not the email, or other places in Gmail.
*and only in Gmail, not other email providers, or other sites.
*does not affect the other cursors like the arrow, for example.

zigmund's avatar

I’m still not clear what you’re asking.
Try again.

Mariah's avatar

@flo What is the “fake hand”? That is what is confusing me.

XOIIO's avatar

Can you just take screenshots or something, damnit.

dappled_leaves's avatar

I think she’s talking about the fact that in Gmail, sometimes the cursor is represented by an arrow (to select specific emails in the inbox) and sometimes the cursor is represented by a hand (when hovering over links). I don’t think she has the vocabulary to explain what she is seeing… and she doesn’t seem to be inclined to tell us why it matters to her. She may not actually be having a problem.

flo's avatar

The fake hand which I never find in non fishy sites, is the one where all the fingers (stubby )are stretched, and the regular hand cursor is the one that is pointing (thumb and index finger stretched). Just hover at the link here, “Genral Section” above, that is the one. I have a kind of an emergency that is taking away my time from the computer, so thank you all, I will post a screenshot next time.

flo's avatar

By the way,@dappled_leaves I think she’s talking about the fact that in Gmail, sometimes the cursor is represented by an arrow (to select specific emails in the inbox) and sometimes the cursor is represented by a hand (when hovering over links).
That is not what I mean but I have to get going

zigmund's avatar

@flo: Perhaps if you could explain what exactly your problem is, we could help you. I’m not getting it.

flo's avatar

If noone has ever seen the fake hand that I described then there can’t be an answer.

It is not among the cursors in one of the results in Google Images search:

Here

flo's avatar

…not that I expect it to be there.

XOIIO's avatar

Take a screenshot of it

flo's avatar

I am trying to take a screenshot of it but the fake hand blinks whenever the “print screen” key is pressed. There is no fake hand on the screenshot.

flo's avatar

The arrow, the real hand, the fake hand, they all blink. If I keep it pressed I get fast blinking.

blueiiznh's avatar

Is this the Fake Hand you are talking about?

dappled_leaves's avatar

I think she means the hand cursor that shows up if you slowly drag the mouse upward or downward along the boxes that allow you to select emails in the Gmail Inbox. That hand is open, with all fingers the same length. The two cursors that allow you to select anything are the pointing hand (links) and the arrow (to click the boxes to select emails). If your cursor is between the boxes, i.e. your aim isn’t very good, and you’re not hovering over the box, then you get the “fake hand” (I guess we’re calling it that now?). It’s not a glitch or an error, it just means “point your cursor at the box already”.

@flo If you’re having trouble pointing the arrow at the boxes, maybe you should zoom in a little. You might find it easier.

@blueiiznh a few posts ago, above, I wrote “The fake hand which I never find in non fishy sites, is the one where all the fingers (stubby )are stretched, and…”
Did you neeed to download something or other ( @lillycoyote suggested it on another OP)

@dappled_leaves Isn’t curious why some people __have__ the answer to a question or just pass it and some people absolutely need to be hostile for whatever reason. Bogus answers are bogus answers no matter how much they get wrapped up in whatever…And it is soooo obvious that it is a bogus answer. Are you thinking that I must mean your answer?

lillycoyote's avatar

@flo, I think I may know what’s going on. It hit me today when I was reading something on Google Books and Amazon. You described the “fake hand” as having five fingers right? OK. That is not an error or something that needs to be corrected.

On some websites and with some applications, like Adobe reader, what happens is that if you cursor over a portion of the screen that is non-interactive, for example, if you use the “Look Inside” feature for a book on Amazon, to see images of the book, you will get the five fingered hand because all you can do is scroll through the pages, same with the pages of a book in Google books. When you cursor over to some part of the screen or page you can interact with, enter data or click a link, you will get the “pointing finger” hand back. I imaging that is what is happening in gmail. It’s standard cursor behavior.

Could that be it? I may check gmail but I never use it so I had to have them send me email on my regular account to so I can reset my password.

dappled_leaves's avatar

@flo I can’t tell whether you are calling me hostile, or if you are saying that others have been hostile while I have been helpful. Please know that I am only interested in helping.

Basically, @lillycoyote and I have given you the same answer. Would you be willing to have a look and see if this is what you are experiencing? If not, could you explain how it is different from the hand we have both described?

flo's avatar

@lillycoyote I can’t find it in me wasting my time trying to understand the existance of the hand in question. All I know for sure is the other sites, all kinds different sites, email providers, don’t have it. And even Gmail before this past 2 weeks, didn’t have it. And that was fine. In Gmail it is only at specific tiny dot of an area, no other area in Gmail (I have been all over Gmail)

I have to put this OP to bed.

@dappled_leaves now you sound not hostile at all. How interesting

My post way above: http://www.fluther.com/136064/what-is-there-to-do-when-you-get-the-fake-hand/#quip2309966
was not to @lillycoyote‘s response:

which I don’t remember seeing it there before
It was to another post just before the first “Response moderated (Off-Topic)” which went like “It may be a de”
