(NSFW?) Can some ladies help me with some health questions?

Asked by poisonedantidote (21680points) December 15th, 2011

This is going to be very long, but please read all of it as it is important and all very relevant information.

Being a guy, womens health is not exactly something I am too familiar with, and due to recent events I now have a lot of questions.

Just over a month ago I moved to the UK to be with a girl who is now my girlfriend. The two of us are very happy together, but about a week ago things went a little worrying.

My girlfrind told me she was 5 days late for her period. At first I got a little worried as the word “abortion” slowly scrolled through my mind. I then calmed down when I reminded my self that I know how the birds and the bees work, and knew for a fact that I had not done anything to get her pregnant, but even so I was still a little concerned. However, she then told me to not worry, because a couple of years ago she missed her period for an entire year.

I have since researched online, and discovered that a women can lose their period for a wide range of reasons, be it anorexia, stress, use of steroids, and so on.

Today she is late for her period by a good two weeks, so I went out and got two pregnancy tests just to be sure. We took the test and both came back saying no pregnancy.

Before I continue, it is important to note that she was a virgin until she met me. It is also important to note that I went without sex for 3.5 months and then got my self tested for STDs, all tests came back saying I’m clean. Finally, it is important to note that tomorrow we will be making an apointment to see the doctor, so please no “go see a doctor answers”.

After the pregnancy test came back negative, we had some dinner and then decided to have sex. She positioned her self in the doggy style position, and as I got closer, I noticed her vagina was totally full with a white discharge.

I am used to girls giving off some white discharge when they get excited, some do, some don’t. However there was too much of it for it to be that.

The substance was white, and a little lumpy, just like you would expect with a yeast infection. However she has not complained of any itching or burning, and also the stuff has no smell at all.

I got wondering if this could be her period arriving at last, just without blood or something, seeing as she has had problems missing her periods in the past when she was still a virgin. Maybe it’s dead cells or something, I don’t know.

Part of the problem is her total lack of understanding regarding her own body. She has never masturbated, and even has a bit of a hard time finding her own vagina hole with her fingers. She tells me she has never visited a gynocologist, and has never checked enough in the past to be able to confirm or deny this ever happening before.

I am just wondering what the hell is going on. She is a very clean person, so we can rule out that the substance is from a lack of cleaning.

I was tested for all STDs before I met up with her, and she is very conservative and faithful regarding sex, so we can rule out STDs as the cause.

It could possibly be a yeast infection, but where the fuck did it come from, because there was no infection there yesterday, and today there was enough to fill a good couple of table spoons.

I have no idea what the problem is, she says there is no itching, no burning, no cramp pains, no abdominal pain, there is no fever, no bad smell, and no blisters or other STD/STI related signs.

Again, we are both going to the doctors tomorrow, but until then, I have the following questions to ask:

1— How often should an adult woman visit the gynocologist?

2— What is the most likely cause for her missing her period for a full year in the past?

3— What is the most likely cause for her missing her period this time round after not missing it for a full year or so? (we always use a condom, and even then I never finish inside of her just in case)

4— How serious is it to miss your period? can it cause problems in later life when trying to have kids?

5— What the fuck is the white stuff or what is it most likely to be?

6— Has anything like this ever happened to you or someone you know?

7— How serious is this situation?

8— Know any good wig shops where we can buy a good couple of rugs for after we pull all our hair out?

This may or my not be something serious, and without a doctor getting into this to test it, there is no way to absolutely know what it is. Trying to get anyone to diagnose this through a question and answer site, is both dangerous and short sighted. Menses one of the body’s ways of cleaning it self out. An OBGyn is the only place you should be getting these answers. None of what you have asked about is within normal limits if it is not natural for her, and she needs to see a physician to establish that.

The white stuff can be your left overs. Sometimes it can take a while before coming back down. Its not till the muscles relax will it come back down.
As for missing her cycles for a whole year, it could be hormones to thyroids or a problem with her pituritary glands or her ovaries. There are a ton of reasons. How old is your girlfriend?
Also a negative on the test doesn’t mean she is not pregnant.

@poisonedantidote annewilliams5 is correct, the doctor’s your best source. You listed 8 queries: 1 is determined by the woman, the doctor and the insurance, 2 requires knowing how old she was, her entire menses experience from her first period to now, her lifestyle, physical activities and exposures to environmental factors. All items you can document before the doctor’s appointment. This will help with answering the Doctor’s questions. 3, 4, 5 & 7 only the doc should cover this, 6 is irrelevant unless the person is an immediate female relation to your friend as genetics could come into the discussion. 8 Sorry about the wig shop, not in UK.

1. Annually.
2. It really could be anything. Some women simply have irregular cycles.
3. See above.
4. It’s not “serious” in and of itself, but women who have irregular cycles may have some fertility issues.
5. It’s really impossible to say, although I do want to point out that it could be yeast even without any itching or other symptoms. Candida is a normal part of the vaginal flora and some women don’t experience any adverse symptoms when it becomes overgrown.
6. Probably?
7. Serious in terms of what? Probably not life-threatening…
8. Good luck.

@Pandora I treat my jizz like a biohazard, it’s not my leftoves. The closest my sperm has come to her was a trah can in the corner of the room. She is 21 years old.

NOTE:

We are going to the doctor tomorrow and nothing said here will change that. It’s 4:30am and we are just looking for some info to get a general idea, so please, no more go see a doctor answers.

I asked about her age because some womens hormones don’t settle till their early 20’s.
It can still be a yeast infection. It really doesn’t have much to do with cleaniness. Some women are just prone. Here a link.

1— How often should an adult woman visit the gynocologist? Annually, for a pap/pelvic exam.

2— What is the most likely cause for her missing her period for a full year in the past? You said she’s 21. How old was she when she missed her period for an entire year? Was she under nourished, poorly nourished, over stressed or taking a form of birth control? Does she have a history of gynocological problems in her family?

3— What is the most likely cause for her missing her period this time round after not missing it for a full year or so? (we always use a condom, and even then I never finish inside of her just in case) It could be stress. Yes, it could be stress or polycystic ovarian syndrome.

4— How serious is it to miss your period? can it cause problems in later life when trying to have kids? It isn’t normal and should be checked. It isn’t that missing periods can cause problems. It it problems that are causing her to miss her periods.

5— What the fuck is the white stuff or what is it most likely to be? Most likely yeast. Every woman has vaginal yeast and it is usually nothing.

6— Has anything like this ever happened to you or someone you know? No. My period was always as regular as clockwork. No abnormal discharges.

7— How serious is this situation? Since she hasn’t been sexually active, I doubt it is serious. The lack of periods is the most troubling to me. PCOS can be a nightmare for women trying to conceive. But we don’t know if that is the cause of her missing her periods. There is normally pain associated with PCOS, but not always.

8— Know any good wig shops where we can buy a good couple of rugs for after we pull all our hair out? Not in the UK.

Not all yeast infections are accompanied by itching. Yeast infection can come from many things such as wearing damp underwear or taking antibiotics.

If she has PCOS that’s causing her menstrual irregularity, then she probably has glucose intolerance as well since those two tend to go together. Glucose tolerance can lead to a hormonal imbalance in the vaginal area- leading to yeast infections, which, again, might not be itchy.

@bkcunningham She was 19 when she missed it a year, stressed and fairly under weight. As for her family we dont know.

@everyone I hope it is yeast infection, almost all women get that some time in their life, but the missed periods is a worry indeed. I almost hope she is pregnant just so we can rule out any big health problems for her, such as cancer or infertility or something.

I just did some more reading about yeast prevention. Apparently some people say yeast can come about from, wiping the wrong direction, using douches, wearing tight pants that ride up, and or thongs, eating to many products made with white sugar, or eating pasta or any food in the white catagory or using a soap (most have some perfume on them) that can cause skin irritation or perfumes, or bubble baths, or allergies to clothing detergents or even a urinary tract infection. Just cleaning it to much (like douching) will upset the natural flora balance. Also steroid or antibiotics or birth control can upset the balance.

Women can have yeast infections and not itch.

She should be seen by a GYN who can do cultures on her so she can be treated correctly. I do not recommend self treating it with over the counter meds if she has no experience with baginal infections. If it is a bacterial infection it could affect her fertility.

White discharge has nothing to do with her late period in my opinion.

If she missed her period for a year and was not malnourished she probably has Policystic Ovarian Syndrome, but not necessarily.

1. As others have said, she should be seeing an OB/Gyn annually.
2. Her stress and being underweight could very well have been the cause of her missed periods. When the body is malnourished it begins to slowly shut down systems, and the reproductive system is one that can be shut down without doing any harm.
3. See number 2.
4. I don’t know if missing a period is considered serious. I know that when I was younger my periods were never ever regular. I asked my OB about it and he said that since they had always been that way it wasn’t much of a concern and if there was a sudden change that could be a concern.
5. The white discharge could have been cervical mucus, it indicates that she is ovulating. That was the cleanest image I found that showed the mucus, you can find better images if you do a search.
6. I have never missed periods for an extended period of time without being pregnant or nursing, but I do know it happens.
7. It could be serious or it might not, your choice to see a doctor is the right one.
8. Here is a resource that, while not providing info on wigs, has info on your apparent case of trichotillomania.

Would you report back to us, @poisonedantidote, what the doctor says?

wilma's avatar

I agree with all the good information above me.
If a woman is having sex she should be seen by a doctor at least annually for a pelvic exam and pap.
The discharge could also be from an allergic reaction to your condoms. Some women are sensitive to the material that they are made of and /or the spermicide.
I’m glad that you are seeing a Dr. soon, good luck.

I have no idea about most of your questions but I can tell you I miss my period if the slightest thing is off kilter in my body. Kidney stone? Missed period. Digestive troubles? Missed period. Respiratory infection? Missed period. I mean, this probably isn’t the norm, but it can happen.

Reporting back…

We went to the doctor and she has an appointment. Today she got her period also, all be it over 2 weeks late.

I’ll drop back in once there is more info.
