What is really in the food we eat and what good books are there which discuss this?

Asked by Taz0007 (145points) December 21st, 2011

I had an interesting discussion with family today about GM foods, MSG and all the other contraversial areas of todays food production. Has anyone read any good books which discuss these points? If so, titles and authors would be appreciated!

Watch the movies Food Inc and King Corn. I couldn’t make it half way through Food Inc.

I’d check some of Michael Pollan’s books. In Defense of Food describes “foodlike substances” as compared to real Food.

Omnivore’s Dilemma and In Defense of Food, both by Michael Pollan, are excellent.

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver is very good – mostly an emphasis on eating local.

Michael Pollan is the penultimate food writer.

@syz: So then who’s the ultimate?

There’s also Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal by Eric Schlosser. I have not been in a McDonalds or Burger King since I read it.

@gasman Yeah, I started thinking about that – not the best choice.

My vote is for The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan. It will change the way you think about what you eat.
