I have noticed posts being deleted (personal attacks) and snippy posts, lately. What's gotten into people?

Asked by Jude (32204points) December 23rd, 2011

I don’t get into deep discussions here anymore (too busy), but, I happened to lurk in a few and noticed a bit nastiness. More so than in the past.

Don’t think it’s more than in the past.

I chalk it up to the usual, gross immaturity and egos threatened by differing POV’s.

I has crossed my mind that some people may be extra stressed by the holidays, those that probably don’t cope well anyway, and maybe they are a little extra “sensitive” to being disagreed with, and certainly so when they are actually told they are being unfairly accusatory or assumptive.

Bottom line, those that consistently SHOW themselves to be difficult, pissy, childish, arrogant, ARE that way, beyond an occasional off moment which can happen to anyone.

I always watch for consistency…it’s the best barometer of what sort of personality you’re dealing with. Stable or teetering on the edge. lol

Jude's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir Perhaps it was just the few that I lurked at..

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

I haven’t noticed more of it, either. I do, however, feel like there is more focus on it.

I think it’s more of a case where personality types who clash tend to be drawn to different types of questions, and so don’t actually interact with each other all that often.

But, occasionally, a question comes along that attracts both personality types, and then you have…..a flame war.

JilltheTooth's avatar

Seems that stress levels are up this time of year, I noticed it last year, too. But hey, summer’s right around the corner, yahoo! (I know that doesn’t cover our Aussie and Kiwi jellies, sorry guys…)

marinelife's avatar

I haven’t noticed any difference.

augustlan's avatar

I haven’t seen more stuff being removed than usual, but I have definitely noticed more sniping than usual. I figure it’s holiday stress and the fact that so many of us are currently sick. It’ll pass. :)

everephebe's avatar

What’s gotten into people, dunno maybe the eggnog?
Dealing with certain family members during this time of year can bring out the worst in people. I haven’t noticed anything less than holiday cheer. But then again I’m avoided a bunch of threads that could have the potential to go there, and I try not to pay too much attention to dramatic or mean folks.

AnonymousWoman's avatar

I don’t think it’s fair for you to judge that unless you’ve seen the posts for yourself. I recently asked a question that had responses removed that I don’t think should have been. I certainly did not flag them and I did not find them that offensive. If you did see the posts that were removed before you saw that they were, feel free to disregard my first sentence.

JilltheTooth's avatar

@AnonymousGirl : Huh? Which “you” are you addressing?

AnonymousWoman's avatar

The OP. Who else?

augustlan's avatar

@AnonymousGirl When a post gets removed, it says why it was removed (personal attack, flame bait, etc). She can see that something happened, even if she can’t see the actual post.

AnonymousWoman's avatar

That’s also a matter of opinion. What looks like a personal attack to one might not be a personal attack to another. What looks like flame bait to one might not be flame bait to another.

augustlan's avatar

This is true, which is why mods make those decisions. :)

AnonymousWoman's avatar

Yes, that makes sense. Moderators can be wrong as well, though. I suppose it’s better that way. It shows that moderators are human and make mistakes, too. ^_^

augustlan's avatar

We definitely do make mistakes… as you say, we’re only human. :)
We’re always open to re-examining a decision, so feel free to bring anything to our attention for a second look.

AnonymousWoman's avatar

That’s good to know. :)

I am also open to the possibility that I am wrong and am overlooking something. ^_^

everephebe's avatar

I heard that the founders were working on an all cyborg jellyfish moderator team to eventually replace the human team, but they’re still having the obvious translation software issues and other major set backs… So we’re stuck with the loveable fallible humans for now.

Coloma's avatar

@augustlan

Yes, lots of sick jellies, Some sort of fluther virus? ;-)

I’m not stressed but I too have been sick, still….I’m really very good about not projecting my bad mood into the pod, it’s one of my pet peeves, those that project their bad moods onto others.

tinyfaery's avatar

Some people are self-righteous assholes? I’m not, necessarily, excluding myself.

Jude's avatar

I hope you all enjoy your holiday. :)

Bellatrix's avatar

There do seem to be lots of sick jellies and it is Christmas time when lots of people seem to be under all sorts of stress. If there is an increase, that is possibly the cause.

I do agree with @ANef_Is_Enuf there seems to be more focus on these things at the moment. This seems to be cyclic and while I am all for and agree with reflection, sometimes I do think if we become to introspective things that aren’t really problems can begin to seem like they are.

@AnonymousGirl, I am a fairly new mod and I can promise you, censorship of posts is not done lightly. It is a considered process. I have been impressed by the thought that often goes into these decisions. You may not have been offended, but there may have been other jellies who were. As @augustlan said though, if you feel a decision was heavy handed, speak to @augustlan.

AnonymousWoman's avatar

@Bellatrix: @augustlan and I exchanged private messages and she explained why the posts were removed. What she said makes sense to me and I feel better about it now. I appreciate that the moderators here are involved in the community! It speaks well for the site. I am thankful that both @augustlan and you explained what I can do if I don’t see things the same way a mod may have. :)

@Jude: I hope you enjoy your holiday as well! :D

I think it’s important that I address @janbb‘s post and ask if she’s referring to a certain Manhattan Transfer song, that for some reason I can’t seem to find a youtube link to, but I hope she knows what I mean. Stupid internet, it’s letting me down.

Bellatrix's avatar

Not Manhattan Transfer but is this it Vocal Dimensions

Truly awful rendition…

JilltheTooth's avatar

That’s why I didn’t link it, I wanted Manhattan Tranfer’s rendition. I love Manhattan Transfer.

whitetigress's avatar

Been on this thing night and day for the past couple weeks. Haven’t noticed much… Oh yeah, I see something questions I’ve posted have flagged comments. Probably someone trying to troll and get GA’s in the non social section.

incendiary_dan's avatar

There was one of mine that was removed as a personal attack recently that wasn’t, though it was, let’s say, less than polite. The several after it were removed as well because they were discussing it, and so it looks like a nasty fight happened. But nothing of the sort did, really.

I have refrained from posting much (and modding as much) because my home situation is stressful. I refuse to mod on emotion rather that rational logic. That being said, I read all the mod mail and am proud to say our team is top- notch. I see a lot of discussion on posts that are borderline and logic always wins.

Regarding Jellies being snappier than usual, the world seems to be so out of whack and everything that was once considered secure no longer is. The tension of the holidays cannot be helping. I think a bit of snappiness could originate from life in general.

All that being said, I think if the collective is tense. It will all swing around for the better. We are awesome like that. :)

Berserker's avatar

I haven’t noticed that, but that’s because I took an arrow to the knee. Erm. Holiday stress as already mentioned, I guess. But isn’t this time of year meant for joy and peace? Man.
But no, it isn’t something I have noticed, but maybe I’m not in the right questions? Probably a lot of the debates have this more than other questions. Not sure what would create an influx, besides wrapping paper overdose. Man, fuck wrapping paper!

“Can’t we all just get along?”

No we fucking well can’t. I happen to hold some very strongly held opinions on subjects which are important to me, and I’ll be dipped in pig shit and rolled in a sack of Quaker Oats before I’ll let some self-satisfied, mealy-mouthed ass pimple bloviate lies and disinformation out of her or his rectal cavity about it. When some shit-spewing ignoramus promulgates poor-bashing class hate, racism, or turn-the-other-cheek liberal pacifist choad twaddle, I’m not going to politely nod my head and collaborate in their asshattery. I’ve spent my life undeterred by prison, pigs, or pepper spray; the threat of unkindness by some anonymous turd-munchers on the Internet just isn’t all that intimidating to me.

@Jude Bite me. You know I’m kidding. Hope your feeling better and Merry Christmas.

Mariah's avatar

I’m grumpy. My apologies.

janbb's avatar

My SOS was meant to indicate “same old shit.”. Guess that wasn’t clear. Merry Christmas everyone!

MilkyWay's avatar

To be honest I haven’t noticed snippiness very lately…

JilltheTooth's avatar

@janbb : Your “SOS” had me dancing around the house. Not a bad thing.

whitetigress's avatar

@SmashTheState I think we can all get a long. Just because your opinion is strong for your views, doesn’t mean we can’t get along and come to an overall understanding. Might I add, an understanding doesn’t mean both agree on the same terms but understand where one is coming from and how they have come to their conclusion.
