How would you define Hip-Hop?

I’m really curious about how people who’s not too found of the genre would define it. Because of the way popular Hip-Hop is today, I completely understand if you think it’s ridiculous. Auto-tune and MySpace has really messed things up in my opinion. And I think it has become to much of a synonym with gangsters and pimping. Please name some Hip-Hop artists you like or have heard of also.

I think anything about gangsters and pimping is rap.
Hip-hop is something with good scratches, cuts, and bass, meaning, and good emcee-ing.
Example:
A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Pharcyde, Heiroglyphics, Aceyalone, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and yes, bulbatron, Wu-Tang Clan.

P.S.- This kind of makes it sound like I don’t like rap (which is false because I do like rap), but I definitely think there is a difference between rap and hip-hop.
You have a very good taste Allie!
doing headspins and bombing walls is hip-hop.
What they call “Hip Hop” today is garbage. Allie already said what it really is.
All I know is that I’m going to Rock the Bells at Jones beach Ampitheatre and more than half the bands you mentioned are there, with a tribe called quest as one of the headliners.
Eambos: Gah! I’m so jealous!
Edit: I just checked and it’s going to be in SF in August. I’m going to try to go. Wow, thanks for the heads up!
I got great seats at the box office for $80 and they’re already selling for $150 on others sites! Get em quick befre you miss your chance!
Add The Roots to Allie’s list
hearkat: Fuck yes! I love Seed 2.0
can’t spell crap without rap…...
I only like the old school shit, I sware to god it seems like everyone and their cousin are trying to be a rapper these days.
cheebdragon: I can understand why you would say that. There are some pretty shitty rappers out there, but I also think there are some talented ones (Slug? Sage Francis?).
I also like Lupe Fiasco. He’s amazing.
Who and who? Never heard of them
Lupe Fiasco is a hip-hop artist from Chicago. He’s one of the only new guys out that have true lyrical talent, and he doesn’t talk about pimping and drugs. You should check him out.
I always thought a tribe called quest was more like R&B, no?
@cheeb They are almost purely Hip-Hop. If you think their R&B, I’d like to know who else you would consider R&B. :)
Some of you say that there’s a difference between rap and Hip-Hop. That is correct, but it’s not two different genres, one being the conscious one and the other being the commercial.
The way I see it, Hip-Hop is the culture itself containing four main elements: MC-ing (Rapping), DJ-ing, street art/graffiti and breakdancing. The rap is just the act of moving a crowd or “spitting” rhymes.
I can write a five page essay on who I like in Hip-Hop, but instead you can check out my last.fm page.
The people currently making money of the so called Hip-Hop game, people like Lil’ Wayne and Soulja Boy doesn’t deserve to be called Hip-Hop, I refer to it as Hip-Pop.
@Magnus You summed it up right there. Much props.
My bad, I was thinking of a different group, I had to consult my “homie” on it, ironically he is a rap artist and so is his cousin, seriously LOL.
If your bored you can check out one of his songs at emmaculate team
Magnus: Well put. I couldn’t agree more.
