Why was the United States most to blame for the Cuban Missile Crisis?

Asked by emeraldisles (1949points) December 27th, 2011

I am trying to write an essay on why the US was most to blame for the Crisis. I need to have at least 2 compelling arguments and at least 2 supporting details for each, along with at least 2 facts. So far all I can think of /research is because of the failure of the Bay of Pigs invasion and because the US was overly confident in their ability to overthrow communist Fidel Castro. Can you point me in the right direction of some websites that would help me support my arguments?Any additional info would be so appreciated.

The Wikipedia page looks pretty well sourced, and you can just follow those sources you need.

Well I don’t have any site in mind but don’t forget the missiles we had placed in Turkey which gave us a fairly clear shot at all the major Western cities of the Soviet Block including their capital. That in itself acted as a significant factor for the Soviet Union to place missiles in Cuba.

I wouldn’t say that the failure of the BoP invasion was to blame for the Missile Crisis, I’d say the attempt to invade at the BoP was at least partially to blame for it.

The U.S. wasn’t mostly to blame for the Cuban Missile crisis. The blame falls on the Soviet Union for placing the missles in Cuba. Whether they were justified because the U.S. had missiles in Turkey is another question. The Cuban Missile crisis would have happened with or without a BoP.

Well thank you. I am writing my essay with the argument that the US was most to blame which is one of the options.
