(nsfw- possibly) Ladies- Does your menstrual cycle ever occur during an important date in your life?

Asked by jonsblond (44203points) December 27th, 2011

Does Aunt Flo like to arrive just in time for your anniversary or New Years? Does she rain on your parade?

How do you handle the inconvenience on a day you like to celebrate? Do you just go with the flow?

Mine arrives just in time for my birthday. Every year. The back pain and cramps make we want to cuddle in my bed and do nothing at all. My birthdays are spent in bed with food, pain reliever and a good film.

tmi. I know. but hopefully some Fluther ladies can relate?

I don’t mind if it arrives on those days. I don’t like it when I’m menstruating while I’m on a camping trip with toilets out in the open that I have to walk far to reach, though. This happened to me in Outdoor Ed when I was younger. It was a pretty important trip, too. I really hope no one saw me changing tampons or anything like that out there, especially the guys. It was embarrassing.

Mine happens when I am on vacation a lot of the time. Really annoying. I just buy a box of tampons and deal. Some time during day 3 I usually pee 5 times in a row in one hour. It once happened to me on a flight, one of the rare times I did not have the aisle seat. The man I was sitting next to must have thought I was sick.

I swim, dance, etc when I have my period, so not too big of a deal. Although, on my heaviest day I sometimes avoid swimming, just depends how I am feeling, usually it doesn’t affect me too much though.

No, because I’m really good about using The Pill to regulate exactly when I get it. Sometimes, I really just kind of have to suck it up (like in December – is it better to get it the week before finals, of finals, after finals, while considering a 10-day PMS period in addition to the actual bleeding days? Hard to say), but if it’s just 1 or 2 days I need to avoid, I’m on top of that.

@AnonymousGirl For camping, you might want to look into a cup. All the cool kids are using them.

^ I have heard about those and am interested in trying one out. There are even menstrual cups that are sold around here. Thanks for the reminder! Maybe I will go buy myself one in the near future just because of it. :)

@Aethelflaed I can’t take The Pill. I’m stuck with an uncomfortable bloody birthday for now. :(

@Aethelflaed Hey, it gives me a good reason to sulk and let my husband pamper me even more. ;)

I don’t get painful cramps that much. I have heard/read that eating bananas and drinking lots of milk eases pain when it comes to menstruation. I don’t know if that works for most women, but it seems to work for me.

@jonsblond Ibuprofen doesn’t relieve the cramps for you? Three pills, 600mg, take with a glass of water and some food. 50 minutes later, no cramps.

Yep. Always when I’m out somewhere, or on a camping/swimming type day. I’ve figured out how to take care of the worst of it though. I bought a cup, so I only ever need to carry one thing and I’ll never run out at a crucial moment, and I had my doctor give me a contraceptive implant which takes care of the cramps. Painkillers never did anything for me. Now aunt flo can arrive whenever she likes, she won’t ruin my day.

@AnonymousGirl I can’t eat bananas. The potassium gives me stomach cramps for 3 hours. I’m really screwed aren’t I ?!

@JLeslie It helps a little, but the first day or two are a real pain no matter what I do. Honestly, the only thing that really helps is marijuana, but that’s not an option right now.

I find a lot of people who say ibuprofen does not do much don’t take enough, or don’t take it often enough. I’m sure for some people it simply is ineffective, but I just mention it because it is magical for most people.

@jonsblond Nah. Your husband seems to love you! :)

Gentle tummy rubs from a partner can be good also.

I avoid it deliberately with BC when I know there’s something important coming up. However, skipping periods results in a couple hours of debilitating cramps when the time comes to… uh… release the buildup. It never happens on a day when I can just hide in bed!

TMI time:
Recently, I had to do some panicked Googling to figure out what a decidual cast was.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

Yep, it happens all the time. There is no way around it, for me, my periods are debilitating.. so if it’s an important date, any celebrations have to be postponed because I am “sick.”

I know they seem to land on vacation time. Especially if I’m flying somewhere or heading to the beach. Blah!

Often. I had my period over Christmas this year for example. I am thankfully that my period is very manageable. I don’t get too much pain and they are rarely heavy enough to put a hold on anything so it doesn’t bother me too much when it does come at potentially awkward times. If I know I am going to be on my period during a trip abroad when I don’t want to be bothered with planning in tampon changes to journeys, I just don’t take a break in between my months worth of pills.

Happens to me a lot! I hate it. If it’s things like a road trip then I have to deal, take my pain killers every six hours.

Always whenever I go camping. Always.
