What is a good website to meet people with similar interests (not for dating)?

I’m not really looking for something like myspace which is mostly to keep in contact with existing friends. I’m looking for something that basically it’s only purpose is to meet new people on it.

My daughter wanted to find people to mountain bike, ski and run with when she travelled; a relationship started platonically and has turned romantic. But it doesn’t have to.
