Are there any treatments for a hangover that actually help?

Asked by ANef_is_Enuf (26839points) January 1st, 2012

I think this is my first real hangover. I have said that in the past when I’ve woken up with a bit of a headache, but this is pretty horrendous. I don’t have any tomato juice or Gatorade, but I have been drinking lots of water all morning. I am too sick to stay asleep for more than a couple of hours at a time, but I plan to go back to bed (several times) today.
Are there any important tips that I should be utilizing to feel better?

If you can, eat something greasy.

@Mamradpivo I was wretching over a bowl of rice this morning… will that really help?

Time and darkness will help. But really, time is the only way to get past it.

What I also used to try was some good soup with some spice to clear the head and calm the stomach, something like menudo or hot and sour soup. And a little hair of the dog, a Bloody Mary or a screwdriver, will help, too, but just one, with food, followed by a nap on the couch.

I just saw what you posted about rice. Try some pepto-bismol or alka seltzer.

Somehow get your hands on a giant slurpee . It works wonders.

@digitalimpression we don’t have 7-Elevens around here, but that actually does sound good.

I just got this hangover cure link sent to me.

It says avoid hair of the dog and greasy foods.

Good luck!

@zenvelo oh, good deal, thanks much!

Water, lots of water. A hangover is basically dehydration. You need fluids (that don’t contain alcohol or caffeine).

Ginger or peppermint can help with feeling sick.

EmergenC or Airborne effervescent tablet, biscuits and gravy with hash browns, coke with lots of ice, cool washcloth over your eyes and naps.
It will eventually be better, even if it doesn’t feel that way now.

@downtide beat me to the correct answer :-)

Lots of water and rest and time.

And maybe do something that you enjoy doing to take your mind off your misery, but nothing too strenuous…Homer-out on the couch and listen to your favorite playlist/CD, watch a romantic comedy (or sci-fi zombie horror flick, or whatever)...

Sugar helps. I always crave French Toast with lots of syrup. The only real cure, though, is time. One other thing, if you ever find yourself drinking a lot again, before you go to bed drink as much water as you can handle, to the point you almost feel sick. I mean, as MUCH as you can handle. That really seems to help quite a bit for the next morning.

Having said that…...HA HA!!!! @ANef_is_Enuf HAS A HANG OVER! HA HA!! Banging pots and pans together. GOOD MORNING @ANef_is_Enuf!!! WAKE UUUUUUP!!!!

I find bananas wonderful for a hangover. That, or the hair of the dog! Hope you feel better soon :)

A big bowl of medical marijuana

No…no hair of the dog!! An acquaintance of mine, who is now a recovering alcoholic, said that the hair of the dog is what really started her downward slide into full blown alcoholism. Her words, “When I found out that having a drink first thing in the morning after a night of drinking actually helped, that’s when I really got into trouble. Since I was hungover every morning, I started drinking every morning…and then through the rest of the day. I think it was when I dropped the baby that I realized I was really in trouble.” Ish. I can’t imagine drinking like that!

Poor baby. Does your head hurt? Poor baby. GIT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, hangovers are about dehydration. My ” cure” on the rare occasions I need it has been, for years…lots of fluids, water, juice. sodas and, the number one cure, for me….MEXICAN FOOD! Yep, nothing like lots of salsa to sweat it out.

And, I am not talking Taco Bell…some really good, authentic, mexican food!

Time. That’s it. Avoid tylenol – it’s hard on your liver.

Sorry you’re hurting. Tomorrow you won’t be. :-)

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

Yeah, I don’t really take painkillers unless it’s a last resort… so no drugs. I have no desire to eat, but my husband got me some Gatorade. Taking @HungryGuy‘s advice, and I am curled up on the sofa watching Grumpy Old Men. Don’t think I’ll be making any sauerkraut today. lol.
@Dutchess_III you’re a real peach. ;)

Happy new year. Looks like 2012 is going to be a doozy.

I don’t have anything that will help you now other than water and lots of sleep, but to prevent one in the future, I can help with that. The thing my friends and I always do when we have a night of drinking ahead of us, is before we go home from the bar we stop at the gas station and get a cup of coffee. Normally caffeine would wake you up but when your sooooo drunk you know a hangover is around the corner you’ll still fall asleep like a baby when you hit the pillow. We always wake up feeling like we never even drank the night before. Good luck!

Happy New Year!!

I go with water. Just sip water.

Apparently, for next time you get drunk, drink a big glass of water before you go to sleep and have another glass ready to go if you wake up. If you can keep the dehydration to a minimum, you will feel better.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed. A nice heaping bowl. It will not make you feel 100% better, but it will help you along waaaay better than anything else.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

Usually I am really good about sobering up and having something to drink before I go to sleep, which I did not manage to do last night. But, it’s also extremely rare for me to get intoxicated like I did, that was a big “oops.”
Thanks all. :) (I feel better.)

After 13 hours, you’re probably fine by now. But in case it happens again, drinking water is your best bet. Ice cold water is always easier to take in. One thing that I did once was down like three quarters of a Pepto Bismal bottle. Tastes horrible, but it really helps with the sickness feelings. Denno how healthy that is…but it worked wonders.

Suck in some Oxygen, about 15 minutes you are good to go.

The treatment should have happened before going to sleep. Drinking at least a quart of water, or even half a gallon.
