Can anyone help me find out what's wrong with my Cat?

Asked by tan253 (2958points) January 1st, 2012

I’m taking her to the Vet as soon as they are open, which I think is the 3rd.
For the past 3 days she’s been sneezing and sneezing a lot.
she doesn’t have a runny nose, or teary eyes and she’s eating and drinking fine, however tonight I’ve noticed the white film that cats have are sitting over both eyes, she looks terrible. She’s been really quiet and really clingy.
Anyone have any ideas?
she’s an indoor cat, so not in touch with other cats at all, I’m sick as well I have a cold, but I know that you can’t pass it on to your cats. I’m really worried about her – any thoughts?

The first thing that went through my mind was a grass seed or some other foreign object in her nose causing her to sneeze. If she seems sick (or miserable as you indicated) though, I would not think my suggestion is likely though. I know it would cost more, but if you are worried could you take her to an emergency vets? If you call your vet, they may have put a number on their answering machine or you could look for a 24-hour/7 day vet. I hope she is okay.

Is she pooping and peeing? Is she sleeping more than usual? Some cats can sleep up to 18 hours a day.

Any discharge in ears?

no nothing, nothing abnormal apart from hanging around me more, I’m normally her least favorite person, even though technically she’s ‘my’ cat ha ha….. but now she snuggles up to me and purrs. popping and peeing like normal. Sleeping more than normal but not significantly i just noticed that today. Poor poppet, I don’t know what to do. Allergies?

She could have something in her nose, I do open the window and she sits on the window sill for most of the day, so something could have blown in there? All guess work though isn’t it.
Cat cold she’d have leakage I’‘m assuming.

When they aren’t happy, they will be more clingy. She could have sniffed something into her nose. No idea how you check for that though. Hopefully our resident vet will check in.

My cat had a seasonal allergy but it was in late August., Sept. when the ragweed pollen was heavy. You live in NYC, right? That would make this the wrong season for allergies.

I just found this info about the third eyelid, which i think is what you are referring to as the “white film.”

“Cats also have a third eyelid. While this is not seen when a cat’s eyes are wide open and the cat is awake, a hint of it may be seen when a cat suddenly wakes up from sleeping. The cat’s third eyelid is located in the inward corner of a cat’s eye. It appears as a whitish film that in some cases may almost cover the entire eye.

However, the third eye lid should not show under normal circumstances. Protrusion of the third eyelid may need a thorough veterinary exam to verify the underlying cause. Source

It is lousy timing to notice this with still one more holiday tomorrow. Perhaps there are emergency vets near you. Are you in n. Manhattan? That is a heavily populated area. You might be able to find some services available tomorrow.

yeah i might need to go to ER for her tomorrow, I’m on a budget though which is horrible so can’t really afford it – but she’s my family – and i hate seeing her like this so I think that’s what I’ll do.
I’m in Brooklyn but there is a place in Manhattan.

Thanks x

I wish I could be of more help.

(Where in Brooklyn? I can do some googling for you.)

Let us know how you go @tan253. Hopefully things will settle down and she is fine.

Do you have any animal welfare organisations locally that might offer a subsidised vet service? I don’t know if such things exist, but they might at least know of a reasonably priced vet who will be open sooner rather than later.

There is VERG and Blue Pearl both of which seem to be available in Brooklyn. Though I don’t know how close you are to those places. Before you go, I would describe kitties’ symptoms, in particular the issue with the third eyelid.

I hope she will be in fine health very shortly. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks everyone, she is still sneezing this morning, but playing, eating and her eyes are bright again – I have no idea why she’s sneezing, her nose is normal a little moist as pre normal and she isn’t as clingy – I might wait till tomorrow – I really think it’s allergies but goodness I’m totally making an uneducated guess, thanks for the vets in brooklyn @tedibear

Oh sorry @galicalled, I didn’t see your message, I normally go to the VET in LIC – I’ve emailed them so hopefully they are free tomorrow!
