Is this religious website for real?

Asked by SuperMouse (30853points) January 2nd, 2012

I came across http://christwire.org/ for the first time a couple of days ago and I am really, really hoping it is a spoof. In the interest of full disclosure I will say I think it is absolutely horrifying and incredibly dangerous. Have you seen the site? Is it for real?

Yep, it’s a spoof. And it’s really really funny!

It’s the best type of satire: the type that’s just plausible enough to be real.

Satire, but this one is just as bad and satire as well. On a more serious note this site technically is supposed to be serious, and is even worse than the latter site I typed the link for which is scary.

this one however is real.

@SavoirFaire That explains sooo much; I’m not totally socially inept. Phew!

As satire, it’s extremely well done.

What’s dangerous about it?

SavoirFaire's avatar

Don’t link to that, @ragingloli. They get money for each view.

@Simone_De_Beauvoir it is dangerous because it spreads hate. Even being satire, there are probably people who don’t get the joke, buy into what they read there, and make life choices based on the propaganda.

SavoirFaire's avatar

@SuperMouse Only choices they were looking to make anyway. They’d find justification in tea leaves if they had to.

SuperMouse's avatar

@SavoirFaire sure, but why add to it? Does the fact that they will find it elsewhere really make it ok to spew hate?

I’m pretty sure it’s satire.

SavoirFaire's avatar

@SuperMouse It’s not hate, it’s satire. Satire undermines hate for those who get it, and makes no difference for those who do not.

@SuperMouse Satire can also be humor, and can help those who are less extreme and more open-minded by creating a space in which they, by virtue of laughing, feel safe to look inside and go “oh, hey, wait… was a teeny bit of me in there? Should I reconsider that? Are my views really so out there that people cannot take them seriously?”. It can help moderates become more moderate, because they can do some introspection while not feeling like they have to take on the role of the ‘bad guy’.

@SavoirFaire and @Aethelflaed I have a pretty good grasp of the definition of satire. I also know that if satire flies above the head of the reader and is taken seriously it doesn’t “undermine hate” it feeds hate. @Aethelflaed I have a hard time seeing how anyone who is predisposed to believing this, the people @SavoirFaire says are going to be making these choices anyway, are going to be made to stop and think because this satire.

@SuperMouse I guess I saw the part where they quoted Rachel Maddow as saying “Christwire is extremely excellent and brilliant” as them pretty clearly marking it as satire.

@SuperMouse I in no way mean to imply that you don’t understand the definition of satire. Indeed, I don’t think I’ve said anywhere that you don’t have a grasp on what is satire and what is not. It is, in fact, because I trust you to have a good grasp on that definition that I can point out that satire is not hate and leave it at that.

I would also point out that I never said that satire undermines hate for those who do not get it. I was quite explicit about it only doing so for those who do get it. Thus the real issue between us is whether or not satire feeds hate for those who do not get it or whether it makes no real difference to their hate. I suggested the latter.

Anything can be misunderstood. Confirmation bias affects us all. Bigots, however, forcibly misunderstand everything around them. They go out of their way to read everything in a self-confirming light. For someone this blind, there is no reason to think that satire contributes to their hatred any more than eating breakfast contributes to their hair color. It’s just a feature of their existence.

On a related note, some conservatives think that Stephen Colbert is one of them despite ample evidence to the contrary. Are you equally horrified by his show? It also parodies some of the same things that ChristWire does and people sometimes take him seriously.
