Is a male teacher having sex with a female student is worse than a female teacher with a male student?

Asked by Charles (4826points) January 5th, 2012

Do male teachers get punished more than female teachers for these crimes? Is there a difference in perception? As a guy, I would have considered it a significant score if I could have nailed one of my teachers.

You’ve just defined how sexist our society really is.

First off, neither is “worse” if they are both consenting adults – teacher or not, student or not. Secondly, the perception that male teachers having sex with female students is worse is because the man is seen to be more predatory and “paedophilic”, whilst, as you say:

“As a guy, I would have considered it a significant score if I could have nailed one of my teachers”…it’s seen as less predatory and less threatening on the woman’s part.

It is exactly the same but what @Adirondackwannabe said.

I do not think one or the other is worse. If they are both consenting adults, it is not bad at all, imo. If the student is a child and consents, it is statutory rape and it is equally bad regardless of genders in my eyes. I’d say the only difference that could arise is the situation in which the student does not consent, which is much more likely to happen with a male teacher (though female rape can occur, which would be just as bad, it is simply far less common). Or the student is coerced into “consenting” due to fear, which can happen with either gender, but is again more likely to happen if the teacher is male/physically more powerful.

They are both equal, but society dictates a lot of things.

They both are the same.

The law sees it this way and so do the courts.

Gender swapping makes no difference.

Although it’s difficult to generalize and the context makes all the difference, there is some (highly controversial) evidence that men tend to be less negatively affected by sexual abuse than women are.

If we look at the teacher rather than the student, it makes no difference. Whether male or female both are as bad in that they are potentially abusing their position of power.
