What was your favorite childhood movie?

Asked by babybadger (1790points) January 5th, 2012

The movie that still gets you a little excited when you see it on the television. Let’s reminisce a bit, shall we? Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a serious contender for me, as is Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Star Wars, epecially Return of the Jedi… I watched that movie so many times I got sick of it. Hundreds of times each year. I’m more of a Empire Strikes Back guy now.

I don’t think I can pick one.
Labyrinth, Rainbow Brite, Beetlejuice, The Last Unicorn….

The Sound of Music

Island of the Blue Dolphins

The Little Princess (with Shirley Temple)

Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree

Swiss Family Robinson. And Ben-Hur.

Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It was scary (the woods with arm-like limbs and the Queen who changed into the frightening old witch), funny (the dwarfs), musical and romantic. The prince does save her.

The Fly. Not my favourite no, but it was my very first entry into the horror genre…even if that particular movie is science fiction. But I commend it, and it has a place in my heart. Even though I was pretty bored with it for most of its length, the ending parts are what led me to my calling; monsters, gore and death! :) So, not favorite, but most important childhood movie.

As a child, I loved Peter Pan. I don’t always watch it now, but that’s alright. I used to watch it over and over again.

These are the four I used to watch constantly, the ones that drove my family nuts!!

The Neverending Story
The Three Lives of Thomasina
Pollyanna
Heidi (it was an animated version)

I also loved any Disney film.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

The Nutcracker. I wish I knew the version but it seemed to have been late 60’s- early 70’s, in color and actual ballet in most of the scenes. My school would show it and most of kids looked forward to every year. The contender was The Red Balloon.

The Secret of NIMH.
Disney’s Sleeping Beauty.
The Neverending Story.
Mary Poppins.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
The Borrowers

E.T
Wizard of Oz
And definitley one @Leanne1986 listed, The Three Lives Of Thomasina.

@MilkyWay I’m so glad i’m not the only one who loves this film. No one else I know has even heard of it. I always thought Susan Hampshire was beautiful in it!

MilkyWay's avatar

@Leanne1986 Lol! I remember getting a stuffed cat that looked just like Thomasina, and then naming her Thomasina XD
And then I would cry out like that girl did : “Thomasina, Thomasina, come back!”

Kardamom Your welcome! I think there should be more films like that being made today geared for children. They probably think it would be too slow moving for today’s kids but I disagree. If well done these stories have such great lessons to instill in children. The whole idea of loving something and nurturing it and then setting it free. Its analogy to parenthood is so poignant isn’t it?

MilkyWay I loved reading The Borrowers but I never saw the movie. Maybe I should watch it!

jca My little sister loved Lassie too! One time she was watching the show and Lassie was thought to be dead. She cried inconsolably!! She went on and on! “Lassie!!! oh Lassie!” We had to explain that Lassie was ok, Lassie wasn’t dead. Just wait and see. When she saw in the later scene that Lassie was indeed alive she almost died from joy!! I will always remember that.

OMG I forgot The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne!!!

And look at this cheesy trailor for another one of my favorites. Look how they tried to create the woman’s lib angle by including Rachel Welch, lol.

@Leanne1986 I too loved Thomasina! They used to show movies in the auditorium of my elemetary school on certain days during the week in summer (when we were off for vacation). There was always a packed house and I especially remember Thomasina. You probably know that the 2 kids in that movie were the same 2 kids from Mary Poppins. I found out just this year, by watching a special Making of Mary Poppins on Youtube that the young boy, who along with Karen Dotrice, ( aka Jane Banks) played in these movies, and The Gnome Mobile, Matthew Garber passed away in 1977 at age 21 from pancreatitis. Such a shame. He was such a cutie and a pretty darned good child actor. I would urge anyone with an interest in Dick Van Dyke, Julie Andrews or Mary Poppins to check out the documentary the Making of Mary Poppins!

@Kardamom I was aware that the children were the same to that were in Mary Poppins. I love Mary Poppins too!
