Is it legal for me to carry my Bowie knife on my belt?

Asked by chris7112 (22points) January 7th, 2012

I just bought a Bowie knife and I’m not sure if I have to have a CCW permit to carry it on my belt. I live in Nevada and I read all of the laws but I’m not sure what it means.

It doesn’t look like it:

“It is unlawful, within the unincorporated area of Clark County, for any person to carry upon his person a concealed weapon of any description, including a knife with a blade of three inches or more, a gun, pistol, revolver or other firearm, capable of being concealed, without first having received written permission therefor from the sheriff. (Ord. 242 §18, 1965)”

I would contact the sheriff’s office for clarification.

Any knife with a blade length over 4 inches is illegal to carry on your person.

@john65pennington But is that federal, or at least universal, or is there variation by state? And what about swords? Do they classify swords as knives, or does the distinction matter? And how about maces?

Someones been watching a little too much Sons Of Anarchy. I say carry it. I carry three knives on my person at all times. 1 fixed blade and two speed folders. A knife is a great tool.

When I’m out in the woods i carry my Buck knife on my belt. I use it all the time. I’d hate to think that is illegal. (NY)
