What made you decide to cut your long hair?
I wore my hair short for most of my life, but for the last 7–8 years it has been long. I’m bored with it, so I am considering a new cut, but like many people with long hair I’ve grown attached to the length.
I’m not one to cry over a bad haircut, I know that hair grows back, no big deal. I’m just on the fence. If you had long or very long hair and decided to cut it short (or shorter), what made you decide to do it? Did you keep it short? Did you like it, or did you grow it out after that first cut?

My husband likes my hair better when it is shorter. He likes it because my hair is rather fine, and the shorter the fuller it looks, and the neater. So, sometimes I go shorter because he likes it. Sometimes I go shorter for a change. So times I go shorter because I admired someone’s short haircut. Sometimes I go shorter to get rid of damage towards the ends of my hair (but that is rare, usually I layer more instead). Sometimes it depends on my weight, when I am thin, I feel like I can pull off a cool short haircut.
I have kept my hair short through several cuts, so maybe up to 6 months or so, then eventually grow it out. It is never very long, but my typical length is longish. I think if you are going for chin or above the shoulder length, do it now, in the winter, so by July if it is crazy hot it will be long enough for a ponytail. If you are going to go short short, what I call boy short, just remember we are going into the coldest two months, and your ears and neck will be cold. Hair makes a huge difference in the winter. If you wear hats and scarves you will be fine, but if you tend to just go out in the cold and suffer for the three minutes you walk from your car to the store, know you will really notice the difference.
I used to have hair down past my waist. But because my hair is naturally very thick and fine, it was prone to tangling. I had to brush it several times a day for an hour at a time and it would still rat up. But when I got it all brushed, it was amazing looking. Thick fine hair can be lovely when well taken care of.
However, I went travelling for a year and didn’t have time to take care of it. I could wash it, but I really couldn’t just spend hours brushing it several times a day. After a month or so, I started getting massive dreadlocks in the back that I couldn’t brush out. So I finally just got it all cut off. Now I don’t let it grow much past shoulder length.
@JLeslie no, I’m thinking a long bob. I don’t want to go super-short. Maybe if I were thinner, but I wouldn’t go any shorter than my chin without losing at least 20lbs, first. Good point, though, about it being long enough for a ponytail by summer. I tend to like to wear my hair long and natural in the summer, since my hair has a lot of wave/curl. That might be the selling point for me, I like it.
@ANef_is_Enuf Glad it was helpful. One of the drawbacks of short hair for me is I find it to be much more work. Being able to pull my hair into a ponytail means I can turn my bed head into a ponytail, with shorter hair I have to style it.
@JLeslie same here. My hair is very dense, but it is fine… and when it is this long I find it next to impossible to get it to hold its natural texture. But, that is not much of a problem when I can just put it in a bun and forget about it. Short hair is definitely more work.
I wish hair were simpler to change. I like to wear it shorter and dark in the winter, and long and light in the summer… but the transitions are a pain in the butt! :)
I cut my hair off because I was sick of 45 minute showers and spending more money on conditioner than anything else. I have beautiful hair when I let it grow, but there always comes a point when the work outweighs any vanity on my part and I have to chop it off.
@KatawaGrey I really like your hair short, it suits you.
I originally cut all my hair off because my daughter was using my hair to “pull up” when she was a baby, until she lost her balance, fell over and ripped out two massive handfuls of hair. It hurt like hell and bled, so I went that afternoon to have it chopped off.
I’ve cut it a few more times since then, but have been growing it back out the last two years. I don’t plan to cut it again, since my hubby and the rest of the family prefer it long.
As a child, I never cut my hair. My first hair cut wa just before my first son was born, because it was too much trouble to care for.
As a young working woman, I kept it fairly short. When I became a stay at home worker, I stopped cutting it for about 25 years. Then I had a bad reaction to some medication and my long hair started falling out, so I had to cut it all off to save my plumbing. I thought for a year or so I was going to stay ½ bald, but now, two years later, it is nearly all back and getting longer. I’m thinking of keeping it as short as the picture on my avatar.
The few times I’ve gone short it was from very long. I think it must be the drastic change – I want to wake myself up or something.
The time I went the shortest, was because of a very bad home-coloring. I kept it long enough for a ponytail until it grew out an inch or two then I had it chopped off.
Short hair is a lot more work for me.
If you cut 10+ inches donate to Locks of Love.
@JLeslie thanks. I don’t plan to cut that much, and I can’t donate, since my hair has been highlighted.
I like to change my hair a lot. Sometimes, I cut my long hair to let go of what just happened in my life. Other times, I’m sick of it being long.
The afro went out of style.
As much as I like the look of my hair long, I really enjoy the versatility and ease of styling it when short so a few years back I cut it. Only after I cut it did my now husband gasp and tell me how much he had liked my long hair and to please not cut it again like that.
I just cut my hair over Christmas weekend. It was down to my mid back, all one length. I have it in a bob now with the front at my jaw line. I cut it because I was tired of always wearing in up in a ponytail. I had to have it up for work and always had it up at home because the baby would pull it. The constant ponytail was giving me some really bad headaches. It’s really nice not having to pull it up or deal with the headaches anymore. It’s also nice with how much quicker I can get ready now. Washing, drying, and brushing my hair is all much quicker.
Getting a nice haircut makes me feel more confident. I want to get another one in the not too distant future. I could use the confidence. I could also use a break from having my nephew who is turning 1 next week and our kittens pulling on my hair.
