Why does it seem so calming to just sit quietly and watch my cats groom?

Asked by WillWorkForChocolate (23163points) January 10th, 2012

When I feel stressed/anxious or I’m just having a bad day, sometimes it’s really soothing to curl up close to one of my kitties and watch them go through their bathing ritual.

It probably sounds silly to most jellies, but hey, I can’t be the only one who does this…

I do this!! It’s because they’re so adorable. You forget anger or depression when you see a cute fluffy baby :)

Because these creatures behave like there’s nothing else happening in the world and it’s infectious.

Milo here: Actually, I find watching Gail trying to get a brush through her thick Russian hair makes me want to chew on my nails. The only reason I resist is that would spare me the fun of watching her clipping them while I am clawing and biting and raising her blood pressure.

I like watching all animals do stuff. If I’m eating at a mall or restaurant, I take a minute to choose one person to observe at random if they’re interesting enough.

It’s not for long, I stop once I get their license plate down.

I enjoy watching my cats playing or grooming or sleeping.

Probably because a grooming cat is a relaxed cat. I have a similar reaction to watching my fish tank.

Nothing quite as relaxing as watching your cat lick its own butt. ;)

It’s hypnotising I reckon, I nod off to sleep after only a few seconds when watching one of my feline housemates, Millie, Max or Percy, groom themselves, totally soporific.

Watching cats do anything is relaxing, man. I like watching them sleep. Purrrrrr.

Cats do have this effect on one, and sleeping babies as well! However cats and cradles sure don’t mix.
