What are the best ways to go about enhancing a dark video?

I’m interested in what ways I could go about editing my own videos specifically to enhance the quality of “too dark videos.” I am not expecting miracles. Anything will do.

Open source programs? Or a point in a direction of what commercial video software handles this?

Adobe Premier is what most of the pros use to do color correction and other steps. Might be a big pricey though depending on how often you expect to use it..

Try playing with the colour curves in after effects. Don’t get your hopes up, though. Dark videos tend to lack a lot of definition in the dark parts that you can’t get back.
