How did "Bread and Butter" pickles have this name?

Asked by john65pennington (29273points) January 14th, 2012

I love these pickles, but I do not understand how they arrived at their name. There is no bread in the pickles, nor is there any butter. Question: so how did Bread and Butter pickles become bread and butter pickles?

I’ve looked this up before (well, more specifically just about pickles) and recalled this. Maybe some links in there for ya!

They’re cut thin to go in sandwiches. With bread and butter. This is the way we usually have pickes in the UK.

I agree, they are sliced thin for sandwiches. To go inside the sandwich. Usually they are sweet pickles.
