Do you see Mitt Romney as almost the Republican version of John Kerry?

Asked by tedd (14088points) January 19th, 2012

Full disclosure; as if most of you reading this didn’t already know I am a vehement democrat and a liberal (not extreme liberal, but definitely liberal).

I was thinking about it the other night, and I believe Mitt Romney is the Republican version of John Kerry. Back in 2004, I didn’t vote for John Kerry. I thought he was weak, changed his opinions on issues to suit the crowd he was talking too, was wealthy and never really knew the trouble that regular people were facing, etc, etc….. It occurred to me last night that many of these are the same criticisms leveled against Mitt Romney today.

Sure, they both carry their party’s flag well enough.. But when you heard them talk it was hard to believe anything they said. They both wreaked of career politician (which say what you will about Bush or Obama, they don’t have that same stench, I know the things they both stand for). They both give me the vibe of a used car salesman.. just telling me exactly what I want to hear.

Has anyone else felt this way?

Yes, @tedd you articulated it well for me. I feel exactly the same about him as you do. My vibe is that the guy will say whatever he feels he must just to get through today’s Q&A session, then it’s on to the next for tomorrow.

Used car saleman is the vibe I get.

He recently said he doesn’t “make that much” via his speaking engagements…yet his taxes show the speaking engagements bring him almost $400K. The guy is seriously out of touch. For me, that in and of itself reeks. Nevermind the animal abuse he admits to freely.

OMG I didn’t know about the dog thing. That’s inexcusable. As far as not liking the wealthy to be President? Tall order. So is wanting someone who seems genuine. Trustworthy. Down to earth. I don’t think it’s gonna happen.

Astute insight!

Weirdly, I think that you are right.

Yes, I’d never thought of that before.

At least Romney did not marry into money. He made it the other old fashioned way, being a business shark. : )

And @tedd, shame on you for not voting for Kerry. We Democrats don’t swift boat our own…or do we??? LOL.

Far from it. John Kerry spent his youth piloting a Swift Boat on the Mekong River in Vietnam. The Swift Boat Veterans for Truth and the Republicans operatives behind that Lies = Truth scumbag Jerome Corsi slur have a long history of making up false “facts” to support their billionaire donors. While Kerry was off with ordinary sailors winning 3 Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star and a Silver Star in Nam, Mitt Romney lived his life in the lap of luxury, the son of a millionaire CEO of American Motors Corporation. When Mitt said he earned a little bit of money from speaking engagements in 2011 ($374,000) he was telling the truth as he sees it. That is chump change to him, and he has no idea it’s a kings ransom in the eyes of most Americans.

Also, we shouldn’t forget that Romney is a serial killer.

@SavoirFaire Great point. By his own admission, corporations are people, and he killed his share.

There is no real comparison between Romney and Kerry except that they are both kind of tall. Other than that the comparison crumbles. There is no need for me to repeat what ETpro said.

We are comparing a guy that is a coldblooded destroyer of peoples lives to a person that protected the life of his crew and suffered for it. You are comparing a person that lies about the truth with one that was harmed by lies. Not at all the same.

@ETpro @Ron_C You are both completely missing the point of the post. Obviously they are polar opposites in political beliefs, and to some extent even their upbringings.

But their personalities, the things they say, how they act now…. they are parallels in different parties. John Kerry may have been a saint and Mitt Romney the Devil… but the fact remains the same that the style of politician they are is remarkably similar.

Sorry Tedd, I’m not seeing it.

For me @tedd, it’s eerily similar.

@tedd Both men are very welathy and grew up so, as did the now assasinated Kennedy brothers. Both can seem very patrician. But one knows what the lives of every day people are like, and cares about them. The other hasn’t a clue why the working poor can’t go out and buy their own health insurance and send their kids to the best finishing schools, and wildly expensive universities. He could care less about those who are so lazy they work themselves into an early graves. His attitude is that’s what they deserve for not being smare enough to be born a multi millionaire.
