What are some volunteer/giving organizations or programs that I can look into helping?

Asked by Mtrencher (187points) January 20th, 2012

I am wanting to start giving back to the world. I want to help and volunteer wherever I can. I just found out a sponsor a kid organization and am doing that, but I want to do more. What are some good organizations/programs that focus on helping kids in need or anybody for that matter that I should look into?

I can’t think of a better organization to become involved with than with Boy Scouting. It teaches kids 6–18 leadership and values that are critical to living a wholesome, self reliant life. I personally have 40 years involvement with the program and have seen many kids that would have turned to lives of crime were it not for what a good, active Scout Troop had to offer and teach. It teaches boys to be good citizens, to respect the outdoors and to do good works for the betterment of the community. And they have a blast doing it!

I’d suggest organizations @Mtrencher, but it would be better to know what your interests are. What are your hobbies, your passions? That is where you will find the greatest inspiration into where you should devote your time and energy.

I would try to kill two birds with one stone. What volunteering can you do that would also benefit you? Give you work experience? Leadership experience? Skill building? Resume material? You can help anyone, you might as well help yourself too.

@SpatzieLover I don’t really know what would interest me with volunteering as I haven’t done much in the volunteering community. I was hoping to try the organizations or programs out to see if they suit me or not.

@Charles I see what you mean. Use it to further myself with whatever I want to do. Honestly I don’t want to help someone just to help myself. I mean, I want to help someone just for the pure satisfaction that I helped someone better their lives. I’d rather they get the benefit instead of me. I have a good life, and others don’t always have the privileges that I do.

@Mtrencher My question was in regards to what you like in life. Your interests would indicate what type of volunteer work you’d best be suited for & would best suite you.

If you like building, you could volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.

If you’re an animal lover, your local wildlife rescue center.

If it’s kids and you have a love of literature, your local literacy advocacy group.

@SpatzieLover Oh, okay. I like kids, cooking, animals, music, and nature.

@Mtrencher, where I am there are websites you can log into and get information about organisations looking for voluntary workers. That will put you directly in touch with people who are looking for your help AND you can choose things that interest you. It is great you want to do this.

If you are in the US, this is just one site I found from a very quick look.

Kudos for wanting to do this! If you support an organization that works in land conservation, you are supporting the animals and nature which are two of the interests you mentioned.
