Are Linzer cookies from the U.S. or from Austria?

Asked by food (792points) January 20th, 2012

I´ve found contradictory information about Linzer cookies. Some sources say they´re Austrian; others say they´re from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where they made a portable version of the Linzer Torte. 2. If they are Austrian, is there a specific shape that is more traditional? The round shape with a cut-out center, or the round shape with three holes, called eyes, are two examples of shapes.

I looked at five different sources all of which say the cookie originated in Austria (the city of Linz).

The traditional Austrian cookie was made with black currant jam.

” Linzer cookies employ the same recipe as the Linzertorte but instead the dough is cut into cookies and two of them form a sandwich around the preserves. Moreover, the top cookie has a small cutout in its center (known as Linzer eyes), thus exposing the underlying jam and adding to the visual appeal. While the traditional cutout is circular, all sorts of shapes, such as hearts, are also popular. ”

The best linzer torte cookies I ever had was in Innsbruck, Austria! I just spoke of it last weekend. Delicious. Mine was large, and the cookie was a little soft, but not very, two cookies with jam in the middle basically. It was round I think? And, a pretty edge.

Looks like @marinelife has the answer!

Thanks for the info! It makes sense…There are so many different sources… one site even says that a Veronese recipe for the Linzer Torte was found, which is older than the Linzer recipe (it´s not the cookie, but it changes the story of the Linzer torte if it´s true…)

Oh, and by the way, these cookies are very delicious! The wilton cookie cutter set is also very handy because it comes with a plunger. Just reading your description of the cookie makes me want to eat one right now…. but there were no leftovers when I made them a few weeks ago…
