Is this caused by having hard/soft water?

Asked by livingchoice (553points) January 20th, 2012

The water at my home is supplied by a well. I’ve noticed that my skin gets very dry after coming in contact with the water. Is this an indication that I might have hard or soft water? Which one is it likely to be hard/soft? and how do I remedy the situation?

You need to have the water tested (look in yellow pages) for hardness/softness. We have hard water…lots of calcium and other mineral deposits.

I need more conditioner for my hair and have to use vinegar occasionally for rings in toilet bowls and bathtubs and in coffee pots and tea kettles.

Sounds like you have hard water. Pour a little dish soap in the sink, and run the water. Lots of suds, or not much? If not much, you have hard water.
Get a water softener. I love mine.

I agree you most likely have hard water. Add a water softner as @filmfann suggested. Although, just know that very soft water sometimes feels like you can’t get all the soap off of you, even when it is. It takes a little bit to get used to softer water when you have had hard for a long time. Soft water is fantastic for my hair by the way.

Depending on what part of the country you live in, your flesh is being enveloped either in iron or the opposite. On the positive side this is not all bad depending on the aquifer your well is drawing from. Most likely it is deep and clean and full of minerals which the skin loves. However, it is counter to our culture, once you embrace it you will never want city water again.
Who needs the undisclosed man-made chemicals after the fact, splashing all over you. I take the iron any day.

@Garebo: What precisely is the opposite of my flesh being enveloped in iron?

A soft silky, satiny velvety material-the density of the material I haven’t calibrated yet, but I know it would have to meet the most strict guidelines.

I forgot to add, I am grateful I have water but it is as hard as…
