What is a Catrina?

Asked by ToxicLove (179points) January 20th, 2012

Today I wore a necklace with a cameo on it that looked like a sugar skull. Reasearching this, I came across the Catrina dolls. What are those? I know they’re skeleton dolls, but where does the Catrina come from? Was she a person?

No, not a person, but a goddess (Not 100% on that?) from traditional folklore, otherwise known as the Lady of the Dead.

She was a figure in an etching by Guadalupe Posada, that was adopted to celebrate Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead). It is considered representative of purely Mexican art.
