Are there costs for importing items from China shipped in large quantities by sea?

Asked by DrewJ (436points) January 21st, 2012

Hello there. I am manufacturing and importing plastic acrylic cases from China. There will be about 100 cases that are 13×13x2.5 inches. I have already received a quote from the company for the 100 cases and shipping by sea to Los Angeles (where I am located). I am wondering if anyone knows of and can inform me of any other fees I may not be expecting. I would have to go to a Los Angeles or long beach port and pick the items up with a truck and am wondering if anyone knows whether or not I’ll be charged any importing fees or taxes when I try to pick them up… Literally any fees at all. I’m new to this.

You would be liable for Import Duty on the products you are importing. The Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States will be able to tell help you work out how much you owe although it may be easier to find a licensed Customs Broker although you will have to pay them as well.

You would probably also have to pay fees to the port that are handling the goods.

There will probably be port usage fees as well.
