Where or what is Babylon as described in Book of Revelation?

Asked by smilingheart1 (6439points) January 22nd, 2012

A question for Christians and/or any individual who will respond sincerely as this a weighty topic for sure. Do you believe the Babylon referred to in the Book of Revelation (and some Old Testament bible books) is a geographic place and if so, which one, or do you believe it symbolizes the greed of the world’s economic system? Do you know of any books or internet threads that seriously comment on this and can support it well?

Sincerely, my understanding is that the author of the Book of Revelation was describing Rome, using Babylon as a code word.

If I were to assume the prophet really had supernatural powers, which I am not saying I am, but I try to keep an open mind, I will say for the sake of argument he may have seen the future in some manner but was off on the timing.

Following that line of thinking, the closest modern equivalent to Rome would be the USA. Perhaps a near future USA, where, exactly as happened in Rome, the Congress was dissolved in favor of a stronger chief executive.

In Fitzgerald’s story, the title “Babylon Revisited” seems to allude to the city of Babylon as described in the last book of the Bible-Revelation. In that apocalyptical book the ancient city is characterized as a place of immorality where its citizens devoted themselves to lives of luxury and decadence.

Babylon is not a geographic place as described in the Book of Revelation. It does not represent the world’s economic system either. The economy of the world is actually mentioned in Revelation as the “merchants.”
