The sign says no parking for street cleaning. But the street cleaners have already passed. Is it okay to park?
I wasn’t sure, so I asked a police officer who said it’s okay. I parked. Now I’ve got a parking ticket.
Was the police officer wrong? Are there more than one street cleaning truck? Do I need to get a statement from the officer to contest this ticket?
I’m in California.

It is illegal to park during the time period that the sign says. So even if the street cleaner has passed, if it’s no parking from 2 to 6, and street cleaner comes at 3, you still can’t park there till 6 (just an example).
Ice is correct. Go by the posted sign(s). Sometimes, even police officers don’t know. If you can find the officer, let him see your parking citation and tell him you acted on his advice and still received a parking ticket. He will help you, I am sure…...I would.
Ice Ice baby. It’s JCA not ICE!
Street cleaning parking tickets are a way for a city to increase revenue. The police officer either a) lied or b) was clueless about the law. Either way you’re stuck. If the sign says you can’t park, then you can’t park.
Usually there should be big signs posted to let you know when street cleaning will be taking place and when it will be over. It’s best to wait until the time designated on those signs to park again. Or just wait one day to park again. If there had been no signs or no clear indication of street cleaning, then you could possibly appeal your ticket.
Parking enforcement may be a different’ department’s job. It is where I live. The cops can write tickets, but it’s not really their job. It is the parking bureau’s job, and their job, in my city, is to raise revenue for the state (which deigns to share a little of it with the city).
The parking people are there to raise money and, incidentally, to keep the streets clear so they can be cleaned, even if they have already been cleaned.
Always read the signs, yes it is illegal, but hey if the officer said to park and you can find him again, I say go for it and try to contest it What could it hurt?
What can it hurt? Oh, you could lose a day of your time and maybe even a day of wages, if your employer is like that.
