Could you imagine a world without people?

Asked by IzzyAndHerBeans (368points) January 25th, 2012

What would the world be like if no humans populated the planet? We wouldn’t know now, would we? Would we be an abyss of blackness? We wouldn’t know, would we? We wouldn’t know because we don’t know what the world is like without us. Would there be a solar system with stars and planets or would it simply disappear?

Read this book: The World Without Us for a detailed, interesting, alarming, and in the end strangely reassuring view of what the earth would be like if we were gone.

Yes. It would be formidable.

There is a series on History channel called ‘Life after People”, it gives a theory as to what the world would be like if we all just disappeared tomorrow. I actually only saw one episode but found it very interesting!

The episode I watched showed life after people in year increments, something like 100 years, 5,000 years, 1 million years, etc. It was neat how they followed different things; such as how man made structures would break down, or how say the domestic dog would end up through the years.

You should check it out if you’re curious! :)

Actually there are a great number of paleontologists, astrophysicists, and geologists (to name a few) that do that for a living.

The planet has been human free for 99% of it’s existence.

I think it would a pretty swell place with no cities, no cars, just everything coming and going and growing naturally.

@King_Pariah Nature can be pretty brutal on it’s own…

King_Pariah's avatar

I’m aware of that, and I said nothing about the brutaliy of humans and whether or not the world would be better without it. I find your point irrelevant to what I said.

@King_Pariah I’m just not sure if being “pretty swell” is the automatic consequence of unmitigated nature. Too many people use “natural” as a synonym for “better” so I’m sensitive to it’s usage.

The earth would be a green planet… a lot of lifeforms everywhere… yes, I can imagine this planet without us. And it has exist almost all its lifetime until today without us. If the earth lifetime would be now 24 hours, we would have appeared here et 23:59. So… we are the new ones… ;)

Natural synonymous to better? Amusing…

It isn’t hard to imagine. Just take a drive in the country. There are plenty of acres of undisturbed land. That’s what it would be like.

We wouldn’t know now, would we?

No, but we could have a pretty good idea.

Would we be an abyss of blackness?

On a moonless night the only light would be from stars or possibly a forest fire started by lightening. Lighting is another light source independent of humans.

We wouldn’t know because we don’t know what the world is like without us.

It isn’t that hard to imagine.

Would there be a solar system with stars and planets or would it simply disappear?

Why would the existence of stars and planets depend on the existence of humans?

@IzzyAndHerBeans, there was a documentary about what would happen to our planet if people were to disappear from earth. It is called Life after people You can watch the whole thing I think.

It was quite fascinating. It is amazing how quickly scientists anticipate structures we think of as impervious to nature would disintegrate. Buildings and bridges would be destroyed for instance.

It’s really easy to tell, because the Earth existed for 4.4997 Billion years with out any human kind, so just look back a couple of hundred thousand years for your answer.

And if humans suddenly disappeared, it would only take a few thousand, not even one hundred thousand, to erase nearly all evidence of them.

As far as the existence of the rest of the universe, Earth isn’t even equal to the tiniest grain of sand in the desert, and therefore of zero consequence.

I live in a place where I can pretend there are no other people. That’s good enough for me. ”-)
It’s amazing how silent the world can really be, minus the sounds of random wildlife.
Actually, I really like the idea of eliminating our species and allowing the earth to flourish and recover from the carnage of mankinds short, but brutally impactive presence. lol

Better the earth is over grazed by water buffalos than trampled by humans. haha

You can already see that if you check out the sites of abandoned towns. A lot of times you’re lucky if you can find the foundations. Centralia’s like that, though I think the government demolished buildings as people left to keep them from going back.
