Name That Tune: Can anyone link me to some classical music with a soviet Russian feel to it?

Asked by poisonedantidote (21685points) January 25th, 2012

I’m trying to find a piece of classical music I found on youtube once, and I was wondering if anyone can help.

Basically it’s an orchestral piece of music with some humming vocals in it. The piece reminds me of soviet Russia, it has a very cold war kind of vibe to it.

I know that is not a lot to go on, but maybe it’s enough. If you are still having trouble picturing what I mean, try and imagine what kind of music you would hear in a submarine war movie in a dramatic scene when the Russians are going to sea and getting ready for battle.

Thanks.

@MollyMcGuire A very nice piece, but that is not the one I’m looking for. Thanks all the same.

I think the piece I am looking for is maybe a variation of Rachmaninoff’s piano concerto #3 1st movement. Specially the first 30 seconds or so.

Does this guy qualify?

@filmfann I’m gonna have that in my head for the rest of the week now… thanks.

I don’t know if this is the particular tune you want, but The 8th Symphony by Dmitri Shostakovich might work for your project. Try looking up other stuff by Shostakovich, he might be your guy.

Here is some info from Wikipedia tht might help your search.

Russian classical music is my absolute favorite. You think it sounds like Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3? But the chorus is wordless or were they saying specific words?

I don’t know what the Cold War sounded like, but could you be thinking of Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise?

poisonedantidote's avatar

@DominicX It sounds kind of like the first 30 seconds of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3 on a loop, with just some humming over it. “hmmm hmm hmmhmm hmm hmm hmm” and something about it sounds like Russian soldiers on their way to do battle.

I’m starting to think maybe its just a remix of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3.

@SavoirFaire @marinelife It’s not those, but I like them, good stuff.

Try some Dmitri Shostakovich, because he was a classical composer who wrote symphonies for Kruschev, basically. The history is a lot more involved than that, but he chose to live and write in a classical style for the government of Russia, even though he didn’t much care for that style or the government, so his music has a lot of passion to it in a Soviet Russia sort of way.

@ddude1116 Good stuff, but still not the particular piece I’m after. I could be wrong, but I think the piece I’m looking for could have been featured in a movie that had something to do with ships in the 1600’s – 1800’s.

I’ll check back in a while for any more answers, got some work to be getting on with.

@poisonedantidote So is it part of the soundtrack to that film? Or is it a separate piece entirely?

poisonedantidote's avatar

@ddude1116 It could be part of a soundtrack, or just something I saw in a tribute video / remix uploaded on to youtube.

ddude1116's avatar

@poisonedantidote Well, was it in black and white or color? Because that made me think of Master and Commander: The Far Side Of the World, which was fairly recent, and starred Russell Crowe as the captain of a ship. But here are some excerpts from the soundtrack and other things on YouTube, because that movie is basically 1700s era ships and classical-ish music.

@ddude1116 It is none of those links. However, I now have a strong feeling that it was probably this movie. Maybe it was a fan made thing that I saw and not part of the official sound track, you have given me a lot to go on here. Thanks!

@poisonedantidote Anytime! There are a lot of fan made classical bits on the suggestions there along with those videos, I just picked five of them, but there are a surprising amount.

That makes me think of Conquest of Paradise by Vangelis, a new age piece:

I’m going to take a guess on (a) Marche Slav or (b) Song of the Volga Boatmen.

In fact, try the second one first. Even if it’s not what you’re looking for, listen anyway.

@DominicX That hit the nail on the head, that is the one I was after, thanks a lot.

@everyone else Thanks for the suggestions.

Feel free to keep the thread going with similar themed music, I have allready learned a few new names that I’m really enjoying listening to.

I knew it!

I knew it because it sort of resembles Rachmaninov, and it definitely sounds warlike in a way (reminds me of Mars from The Planets) and it’s from 1492, which is about ships, that was the giveaway clue, though I thought of it earlier and then prematurely discarded the idea! :P

Fluther really is amazing, considering how bad the clues I gave were I’m amazed someone actually managed to find it in such a short time.
