Have you ever visited San Miguel De Allende Mexico?
I am wanting to go and spend some time there, and wondering what is the best way to go. I really would love to drive but I m reading now if ever is the time to drive through Mexico, fishing for feedback , wondering if anyone has ever ventured and driven through Mexico.

I would be wary. The cops work partly on bribes, and if you don’t know how to handle a situation when a police officer pulls you over it could get sticky.
I have lived in the Philippines on and off most of my adult life, Now I do not drive there but I have learned a lot from my drivers, and when they could not handle the bribing cops I would step up to the plate. I have always had a no fear sort of outlook in my travels and I have gotten to experience so much more from not feeling uptight or scared.
Well, if you feel ok about it then I say go for it. The road system isn’t too bad in Mexico. Americans cross the borader all the time by car. The one thing I would check is any warnings from your government on travel in that specific part of MX. Best to stay on the beaten path, and not be alone, but I would say that about all countries. Oh, and you might want to double check the requirements for renting a car if your driver’s license is from another country.
Actually I live in Los Angeles was thinking of driving my own. I do worry a itsy bitsy bit , but only of the Drug shooting I have read about, ...then it passes. I am hoping someone who has driven around Mexico answers. :-) Thank you @JLeslie
I’ll ask my husband, but he has not been down there in years, so it might be different now. My husband is Mexican. If your in LA you must know people who drive in MX. There are several Californians here, you should get some good answers. :)
No I moved here less than a year ago, I have not really met too many people, I look forward to hearing what your husband has to say about it.
I have a friend who visit’s her family there several times a year. It is a beautiful city from what I hear, but I wouldn’t drive. There are a lot of kidnappers between here and there!
OHHhhhhhhhh! MMmmmm been looking flying seems so intense for such a short distance Mexico city, than wait till next day to arrive at yet another airport and than 45 min from the next arrival airport to the town, I looked at google map driving seemed so simple was like 1 day and 6 hours… And I love road trips but perhaps through Mexico not such a good idea.
@EverRose11 , they will kidnap for a $500 ransom. They have nothing to loose. You have a car, (especially with an American license plate) therefore you’re rich.
I live in Asia off and on I know how it goes… :-(
You can fly to Mexico City, rent a car and drive from here to San Miguel, which would be pretty safe.
Driving all the way from California would be a bit risky, yes.
Oh, and avoid driving on a highway at night.
Thank you @bob, I will look into that ASAP.
Maybe taking a bus would be better? Either from Cali or Mexico City.
