Sensitivity to light?

I seem to have a sensitivity to lighting, specifically flourescent lighting. It’s really bad and I want to know if this is normal? Does anyone here have the same problem? What can I do to make it more comfortable for my eyes? This is something that is starting to affect my daily life. For instance, I have an office but I can’t work in it because the lighting hurts my eyes after awhile, so I have to go next door to an office where the lighting is very dim and dark to feel comfortable. When I took classes at the local college, I had to withdraw from classes because the lighting above my head made me feel funny and I could hear the lights buzzing. Sounds weird I know but true. My eyes feel best under natural light. If I’m outdoors reading in the park I feel great.

First, see your eye doctor to make sure your eyes are fine. I had a friend who always wore dark glasses at work, to protect his night vision since he was into astronomy.
The other thing to look at is how old are the lights, fluorescent lights have piece called a ballast that could be dying. When this happens the lights flicker more or buzz more. The older the fixture, the more likely this is to occur. Very modern fluorescent lights don’t do that. They just die. If you can reach the fixture in your office, twist the light out and plug in a desk lamp.
You might want to check with your regular doctor about this as well, to rule out migraines or other neuro issues.
@DaphneT I don’t get headaches too much I just get this very odd dreamy feeling. Like I’m in a dream. My eyes feel very weird like I’m looking at things through a dream. I went to the eye doctor and he said my eyes aren’t bad and he gave me a Rx for 1.00 glasses. He also said I had astigmatism but that it’s not very serious. I do read a lot and I spend a lot of time on the computer so I wear the glasses when I do those activities. But the lighting makes me feel high, like I’ve been smoking something. I will take your advice and check with my regular doctor again but there is no way I can reach the lights in my office. We have very high ceilings. Thanks.
Any other physical things going on with you? Photosensitivity can be a symptom of MS. But many people are sensitve to light so don’t panic.
My suggestion is wear sun glasses. When I get up in the middle of the night every so often, and flip on the television it is way too bright for my eyes so I wear sunglasses. My husband thinks I’m nuts.
@JLeslie well as far as I can remember I don’t have any other symptoms but I will stay aware. When the TV is on late at night I don’t really get bothered and as long as I have my glasses on most of the time I’m okay but artificial light just really annoys me. I’m supposed to only use my glasses for reading but I wear them all the time because I feel better when I do and I just avoif flourescent light when I can.
I’m not suggessting prescription sun glasses. Just regular sunglasses. A pair that has only a small amount of tint. I prefer grey or black lenses, brown sometimes hurts my eyes, especially poloraized brown. Optomitrists always recommend brown polarized to me because of my astigmatism, but the glare I see with them bothers me.
Also, the TV on late at night does not bother me. It is the adjustment from total darkness to turning on something bright.
A lot of people hate flourescent light, you’re not alone.
I have to look for sun glasses. Maybe that will help.
I just realized I might have used the word photosensitivity incorrectly. I am not sure it incudes sensitivity to light regarding vision? I know it does refer to sensitivity to sunlight, like people who burn or develop skin irritation easily from the sun.
I am the same way. Fluorescent light is horrible for eyes—it blinks constantly. I have actually lost vision while reading for an extended time under fluorescents.
I used to have problems with sensitivity to light. First off I was a soda addict. And the sugars and caffeine is what I was hooked on. If I didn’t get it, I would get a migraine and thus be sensitive to light. My first recommendation is to check your diet. Are you unknowingly dependent on some sort of drinks? Foods? Etc? But after re-reading your post I think you’re just having eye problems. Seems to me your pupils are out of sync with the way it’s suppose to function. They may be over expanding and tiring out. Get that checked out
I am extremely sensitive to lighting conditions. Fluorescent light is the worst. But I’ve discovered that in moving to the new energy-efficient lighting (the “cool” lighting), I have a similar reaction. I need “warm” lighting. We keep experiementing with different temperatures of the new-fangled bulbs, but I’ve not found nirvana yet.
When the lighting is wrong for me, I feel that I’m in the morgue of an abandoned hospital—not a pleasant feeling.
@auhsojsa I don’t drink soda and I drink coffee sparingly (like once a month or even less at times) and my diet is decent. Lots of fruits and veggies and I don’t eat meat, so it’s probably an eye issue like you said. I have an appointment to see the opthamologist during winter break so I will see what he says. I hope it’s nothing serious like Glaucoma but chances are I’m just like most other people who can’t stand flourescent lighting. I may just have to wear protective shades when I’m under that lighting and change the bulbs in my apt. Funny though my eyes don’t feel weird while I’m staring into the computer screen all day.
