What should I consider when hiring movers?

Asked by ketoneus (1179points) May 21st, 2008

I just need help loading the truck. Has anyone used a moving service recently? What sort of things should I consider?

They will wrap and move everything—no questions asked. Even garbage. So you decide ahead of time what you really want to move. Be as organized as you can. This is a great time to get rid of stuff you don’t truly want or need. Share those things with the world. Enjoy the sense of clearing things out. And happy moving!

Do they know what they’re doing? Does their business have a good reputation? Are the movers trustworthy? You may not know this last one so go with your gut. If your gut says they seem sketch, find other movers. Don’t risk anything being broken or stolen.

I have usually packed myself, and then hired guys from Manpower to help load the truck. If you have not moved a lot, get someone who knows how to pack (especially if you have good stuff you care about). Will they be providing you with insurance? Also, how the truck is packed for load balance and safety is very important.

I hate moving. I wish you an uneventful one.

If you are using a moving company review the insurance for broken or lost items.

Make sure they offer you some kind of insurance. Check online for reviews about their service. Ask them what sort of packing material they use. Make sure they have harnesses, straps, and other restraining devices inside the body of their trucks. I’ve used the moving service USA Express Moving and I went through the entire spiel with them.
