Does this prove that a complete evacuation isn't necessary before colonoscopy?

Asked by Aster (20028points) February 7th, 2012

My friend’s boyfriend has been in the hospital for a month. He has a bad heart and finds it difficult to stand up due to an infected spine. They wanted him to have a colonoscopy but, instead of having to drink a gallon of chalk water or take a bazillion pills all he had to do was have an enema the night before and some milk of magnesia. Does this not offer at least some proof that all the other preps are overkill and not needed? They could not be up with him all night while he got his colon cleaned out . He has to be helped to the bathroom.

Prove, not prove, that’s not really the issue. As unpleasant as the bowel cleanse is, the cleaner the better as far as finding and identifying any anomalies goes. Your friend’s bf has some serious issues that preclude having the full cleanse, but the result may be more problematic than if he was able to do the whole thing. As much as I detest the full-on event, I’d rather have my bowel the cleanest possible before any test.
I hope your friend’s bf is better soon.

Well, it was sufficient enough that they found a large, benign tumor.

In his situation the enema was the best route to take. The pills and the drink are not overkill just a more efficient cleansing method.

Let’s hope that they didn’t miss a small malignant tumor. Finding the large ones isn’t as hard.
