When someone says a food is fried, what do you assume?

Do you assume:
Breaded or batter dipped?
Cooked in oil?
Deep fried?
Anything cooked in a frying pan, but might have been with or without any fat or grease?
Just curious.

depends on the country. In Germany, I would assume properly fried in a pan. In certain other countries, drowned in hot oil.
I assume it’s been breaded and fried.
If it’s in a food service establishment, I assume it’s deep fried (otherwise, they’d tend to say it’s “sauteed”). If it’s in a home, I assume it’s pan fried, probably in a fair amount of fat.
Deep fried.
Otherwise, here in my state we’d say pan fried to denote the difference.
I assume it’s cooked in oil fast enough that the outside will be cooked more than the insides.
I assume that it is heart attack inducing and unhealthy breaded and deep fried.
Now why am I thinking about donuts? I haven’t had a donut in YEARS. Now I want a donut. lol

“Fried” means its not baked.
That tells the whole story.
To me “fried” would be either pan fried or deep fried, both ways using fat of some sort.

I don’t assume breaded, I only think breaded or battered dipped if it states it. I think I am in the minority.

Oh, it’s breaded ( more like Tempura batter )and served with ranch dressing..OMG! It’s fair fare! :-)

@wilma Ok, so now I am wondering if it is a regional thing, but I can’t remember where everyone is from. You and @SpatzieLover are midwest, WI and MI, and I am northeast. So, are southerners thinking breaded? But, I don’t think that is the answer. I think some people who assume breaded on the Q are from those areas.

‘deep fried’ denotes the obvious.
and ‘Southern fried’ means breaded and deep fried, often with mild spice. American style.

note that the cod in fish and chips, or sausage from a chip shop is never called fried.
its just called “battered”. its taken for granted that it will be deep-fried.
likewise, chips are either just “oven chips” or “chips”.

Yeah, there’s no such thing as Southern English, as a style of frying, so it means Southern US style.
In fact, nobody advertising fried foods would ever purposely associate themselves with the South, because as deep-fried foods go, the North has all the reputation.

Generally though, I think of battered and deep fried. Mmmm Onion rings : P

I assume that I can’t have it, thanks to my seemingly irreversible stomach parasite!
I assume it’s cooked in a skillet with a recipe-specific amount of oil or butter. Deep fried wasn’t a concept in cooking in our house when I was growing up, so I don’t jump to it immediately.
