Andrew Lloyd Webber’s upcoming Jesus Christ Superstar talent search will reportedly allow female auditionees. Sources say that the legendary producer is open to having a woman play Jesus in an upcoming arena tour of the rock opera. “Andrew wants to create the best performance he can and if that means hiring a woman to be Jesus then so be it,” Source
What do you think, could Jesus have been a woman?
According to my newspaper in two ‘excerpts’ in the Bible (Matthew 23 “How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!” and in Isaiah supposedly God is described with “female images”) there is talk of Jesus being female.
Could Webber’s idea be considered blasphemy?
Would Jesus have been Christa, would that have meant a totally different church institution only female priests, female bishops and a female Pope?

Wait, but if a woman plays Jesus is she going to be playing Jesus as a woman? Or Jesus as a man? I think thats kinda weird if its a woman, since…..Jesus…..was a man. I would probably also find it strange if a lady played Abe Lincoln, or if a man played Amelia Earhardt. (How the hell do you spell her last name)....but I also must add I think it’s hilarious when men portray women in a comedic way.
Could Jesus have been a woman?
Most assuredly not since he was a Jewish Rabbi.
Can the part of Jesus in a production of Jesus Christ Superstar be played by a woman?
Why the heck not?
Doubtful, Jesus was a man by all accounts. However…I think “God” is an alien. ;-D
No. It was a patriarchal society even then. Mary had to go with Joseph to register for tex purposes.
He/she/it could have been almost anything, maybe even an atheist…..now there’s an interesting thought.
Then who got Mary Madge preggers? O.o
Since most of his portrayals are of white, blond, and blue-eyed, which is clearly ridiculous, I don’t see that going over very well. Although God as a woman was pretty damn funny.
@King_Pariah I wondered if anyone would get the reference – I should have had more faith (so to speak).
Jay: if you’re really a prophet, tell me something that no one else knows
Rufus: You jack off more than anyone on the planet
Jay: Duuuuude! Everyone knows that, tell me something that no one else knows!
Rufus: When you do it, you think about guys. (exeunt)
(Silent Bob gives Jay the creeped out look)
Jay: Only sometimes!
“A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent” – 1 Timothy 2:11–12
Wow, now that you asked…yeah. Throughout history, men has dominated over women that it’s possible Jesus was actually a woman.
No. The Romans did not crucify women.
I like the idea. I’m a struggling Christian. I think it’s a fresh perspective.
For me: sexual orientation < good works
@saint All the more reason why they had to make it look like she was a man? Lol.
I think it’s stretching a point way too far to ever be supported by history.
Stretching is one thing. Stretching beyond the breaking point is another matter entirely.
Technically looking at it, Jesus isn’t human, and doesn’t belong to a race that needs to reproduce, so he probably isn’t a man or a woman. He’s the son of God. Or is God, depending on which branch you’re at. Either way, whatever Jesus is said to be, I don’t think it requires him to be male or female. If I understand right, he took an appearance that people could understand.
If God and Jesus are real, I wonder just what the hell they actually look like in their pure forms. Satan too, for that matter.
But yeah, Alanis Morisette, ftw.
Sweet Lord Jesus could have been just about anything!!!!!!!!
No. It specifically states in numerous places in the Bible that Jesus is the SON of God. Sons cannot be daughters, therefore Jesus cannot be a girl.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son so whoever believes in Him will not perish, but have everlasting life.
Note: This verse is not word perfect, I’m simply going off of memory.
