How do I fix my nasal congestion?

Asked by BoyWonder (811points) February 12th, 2012 from iPhone

I have this problem with my nose. It gets stuffy often, usually in one nostril and when I’m laying down, I constantly have to turn on one side to relieve the congestion, only for the congestion to move to the other nostril, and then I have to turn on my other side. What can I do to resolve this?

You’ve seen it a hundred times on TV or in movies. Big pot of hot, salty water. Hold you head over it, covered by a towel, and breathe in the steam.

Since it’s one side grab a vapor stick :)

Neil-med sinus rinse is a good method to help keep the sinuses irrigated and clear of congestion. But..there are many, many, potential causes. I am extremely sensitive to wood smoke and suspect some issues with gluten intolerance as well. If this is a chronic condition start with eliminating dairy products and gluten. ( Wheat, rye, oats, which includes not only breads, pastas and crackers, but many hidden sources of gluten in prepared foods. )
Get checked out for seasonal allergies such as Oak pollens, weeds, grasses etc. and familiarize yourself with your areas high allergens and their seasons.

Trouble shooting sinus problems is an effort in detective work, but, well worth it.
Oh yes…Mucinex is great too as @SpatzieLover mentioned, but it won’t cure allergies, only thin the secretions to help keep true bacterial sinus infections away.
Good luck, I feel your misery. My neighbor set fire to a huge brush pile yesterday and I ran for my cave. lol

If you are regularly having congestion, you might want to see an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist to discuss the cause.

If you can, give a product like HydraSense a try! it’s amazing – it’s a very gentle stream of saline solution that you shoot into each nostril and it should clear out the sinus cavity. You can use this even when you are not congested. It’s very gentle and I can’t recommend it enough! :)
Feel better soon!

You can make your own saline solution to spritz into nostrils (at no cost).

Make a solution of 1. c warm water and 1 t. salt. Pour some into a baby syringe and squirt gently into each nostril as needed.

My favourite decongestant OTC is pseudoephedrine.

It might be a bit harder to get hold of in the States, what with the massive methamphetamine problem you have there.

Don’t ever buy phenylephrine! It’s useless.

I like the saline sprays even better than a neti pot. And my favorite is 4Way Nasal Mist with Eucalyptus and Menthol.

It’s not easy to find in the stores (at least where I live) but can be ordered on line. It’s natural – and just a joy to use. I can’t imagine being without it.

One caution regarding salt water rinsing. Use purified water as opposed to right from the tap.

Altho not common, there have been reports that some people have ended up with Encephalitis from some weird ass pathogens in the local water supply. I’m not exaggerating. They spoke about it on The Doctors.

Evidently not problematic enough when drinking, but snorting into the sinus area is in VERY close proximity to the brain.

Just use sterile water. Better safe than sorry.

@Buttonstc Good to know, thanks! (and yikes) @GoldieAV16 sounds nice, I’ll look for it. Pollen is HELL in these parts right now :/

Use a neti pot with warm (previously boiled) water and a tiny bit of finely ground sea salt.
