What file extensions relating to text files can you name?

Asked by poisonedantidote (21685points) February 12th, 2012

I am trying to create a complete list of text document extensions for a script I’m making. I am basically making a website with a form that allows the user to attach files to a message and I need to filter the files so it can only send allowed file extensions.

Obviously there is .txt, .doc, .rtf and a few other easy to remember ones, but how many can you name?

Thanks

Hmm, those are the easy ones. Don’t forget .docx for the newer Word documents. I think that .pages is a file from Pages.

There’s a big list here.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I wrote a word processing program in Pascal that always encrypted the text in the file because there wasn’t any convenient way to encrypt text files (you could put your files in a password-protected zip file, but that was a hassle) which used the extension .PEE and made the program available for download on my story site (I also made a torrent for it and uploaded it to The Pirate Bay). Does that count?

Don’t forget about ones like:

.php
.rb – Ruby
.py – Python
.csv
.conf
.log

Those are just the ones sitting on my desktop.
