How may I join the Centro Espírita Beneficente União do Vegetal?

Asked by ETpro (34605points) February 14th, 2012

The Centro Espírita Beneficente União do Vegetal is the South American church classified as a Christian spiritualistic belief system. They use ayahuasca, a tea containing leaves with naturally occurring DMT and leaves from a vine that is a natural source of MAOIs. DMT alone, when orally ingested, has little effect in the human body. Digestive enzymes rapidly break it down and render it inactive. But when mixed with an MAOI the enzyme breakdown is inhibited, and it’s effects are profound. In adequate doses, it produces an overwhelming psychedelic experience that is ineffable.

Many report meeting what they refer to as the fractal people, or the elves within the machine. These “beings” seem to be sentient/ They seem to move through solid matter with ease, and permeate all that surrounds us and indeed goes through us. I don’t know what I hope to learn from the elves within the machine, but one item on my bucket list is to meet them and see what my experience of them is.

Since DMT is classified as a Schedule 1 drug, the only legal way to do that is to join one of The Centro Espírita Beneficente União do Vegetal branches in the US. They are legally allowed to us ayahuasca as part of their religious ceremonies thanks to a Supreme Court decision that their practice was protected by the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act. So how do I go about joining the church?

Send a very large donation. Someone should be aknockin’ at your door soon thereafter.

@gailcalled Not so. Their official website specifically says they do not proselytize, and it has no contact information. If there were a contact link there, I’d just write them.

Have your people contact those other people who know people. That’s all.

Don’t deny you have people. My people know your people.

Looks like you’ll need to hit the Contato button on the lower right corner of the official UDV website.

Edit: Here is their Contato page.

I simply can’t understand why a person would take a mind altering drug that produces an “overwhelming psychedelic experience that is ineffable.” It sounds like a first step in ruining a perfectly good brain. I need my intelligence, insight, and reasoning ability to do my job. Without those attributes I’d be just another retired “burn-out”

Besides, mixing Christian thought with mind altering drugs sounds like a recipe for disaster.

@wundayatta I know you’re watching me. My people have been watching your people watching my people.

@SpatzieLover Thanks. I made the mistake of going to the English translation pages.

@Ron_C Not to worry. Unlike some psychedelia, there is virtually no hangover or lasting effect from DMT other than the knowledge of what you saw during the experience.

@SpatzieLover Message successfully sent. We’ll see what comes of it.

I know you’ll update me ;) I’m curious as to what the response will be. I did find one US site that had a FAQ section. There was no contact info whatsoever, and no question regarding membership/joining.

@SpatzieLover That sounds like the same FAQ I found. I had fully expected one Q/A to deal with “How can I join the church.” I promise to keep my fellow Jellies updated.

@ETpro “Unlike some psychedelia, there is virtually no hangover or lasting effect from DMT other than the knowledge of what you saw during the experience”

I feel that I now stand on rather shaky psychological ground and cannot see the benefit of a psychedelic trip. Our local physicians put me on a pain filled psychological roller coaster ride and I’m having Post Traumatic stress flashbacks from that experience even as far back as Vietnam. A little extra mental fantasy is not recommended at this time.

@Ron_C Everybody is unique. Back in the wild 60s and 70s, I had extensive experience with LSD, psychedelic mushrooms, peyote, ketamine, angel dust, ludes, MDMA, etc. I’m still here and leave the rest of you to judge how sane I may now be. But I definitely have no fear of the unknown. I do respect the power of the DEA, however. I have no wish to break any law to meet the elves in the machine.

@ETpro The ‘Machine Elves’ meme was made popular by Terrence McKenna and his encounters with the brew. It has nothing to do with the UDV.

@pazpaz Yes, I am aware that’s not their goal.
